Halloween Costume Mandatory!!

Saturday, October 5, 2013 - 8:00 AM

Devil's Thumb

This will be a FUN hike, co-hosted by our very own VP of Fun!!  We are going to hike in outrageous Halloween costumes, on a very busy trail in Lake Louise!!  I would love to see at least one BEAR costume (dare you!).

Devil's Thumb, as the name suggests, it's not actually a mountain. Calling it a peaklet would be generous. It's just a promontory. Yet its location is astounding: overlooking Lake Louise, on the edge of a glaciated cirque, among a coterie of 3,000-metre, ice-encrusted goliaths comprising the most celebrated massif in the Canadian Rockies.

This is a short hike, mostly on an exceptionally well-maintained path. But the Thumb is a detour. The route deteriorates, narrows, contours a precipitous slope, then points you at the final, trail-less, skyward pitch and says, "Good luck."

This climactic passage is very short. Strong hikers accustomed to off-trail rambling pound up it unconcerned and would testify in court it doesn't qualify as scrambling. The footholds, however, are small and shallow. (Description credit: Kathy & Craig Copeland)

The only costume not allowed is one of a Canadian hiker! costumes are highly recommended on this Halloween hike! Please remember that every goblin, megatron, and princess  must wear proper hiking boots and be ready for any sort of weather.  The more outrageous the costume the better. Best costume will win gloating rights for the next 365 days.

Trail conditions to the teahouse: Late season - variable conditions. Icy sections. Snow at higher elevations.

You may want to bring icers just in case.

Looks like we will have a nice day for our SCARY hike tomorrow!! Light wind, partly cloudy, & somewhere between 3-8 degrees as a high depending on what elevation we're at... so do make sure you have appropriate clothing to keep you warm while we freak out the tourists...

Will you be coming back to Calgary on Saturday or staying over? I read about the party but couldn't find more details... I love the idea but I work on Sundays, quite early actually.

I love this chic! Sometimes you just need more funny pictures in you life. Who says you need to go with the flow all the time? I see absolutely no reason to act my age ;)
