POWDERFACE CREEK/PRAIRIE LINK/PRAIRIE CREEK LOOP

This hike is part of 3 trails which loops back to where you start. We will park at the Powderface trail head and go for 2.8 km on Powderface Tr.then go north on Prairie Link Tr. for 2.9 km. then intersect with Prairie Creek Tr. which will take us another 5.7km back to where we started. It will take us thru open meadow aspen forest and interesting canyon walls.Toward the halfway point of the Prairie Creek section you rise to a high point above Prairie Creek which has dropoff steep canyon walls. This would be a good place for lunch. This should be a good hike for the autumm colours. We will leave from the A+W parking lot right beside the Safeway. If anyone is coming on the LRT let me know and I can swing over to pick you up,since we go right by there on the way out.You can phone or text me at[masked]-3790.Please bring proper hiking gear such as hiking boots, warm jacket, head gear and gloves,as this time of year you can encounter winter weather. This would be a good beginner hike as it contains no steep uphill and is only 11.4 km. long. Also bring your lunch, water and snacks along with shoes to change out of your wet/muddy boots and a plastic bag.We will go at a moderate pace with plenty of stops for pictures and rest and water breaks.I don't know the elevation since it is part of 3 trails and is gentle up and down I have done this trail at least 3 times already. There may be a few washout area's on the Prairie Creek section which we may have to detour around,

Not even an ear popped up from the back of the car the entire drive back to Okotoks, and neither dog has moved much since. We all slept very well last night.

Great fall hike. Thank you, Wayne, for putting it on. We were very lucky to have sunshine and warm weather. I really appreciated being able to take my dog, Timber, on the hike. We both had a wonderful time!

Nice little loop, not much elevation gain and good trails. Care needs in summer or on weekends as there are a lot of mountain bikers.

As I live in SW Calgary by Westhills, I would like to meet at the Trailhead or Cinnamon Spoon in Bragg if that's ok? I can be at Cinnamon Spoon at just after 9, or would you prefer I be at the trailhead at 9:30?

Does anyone need a ride from Westhills area?

    October 9, 2013

  • Duffy P.

Will drive and can leave from Shouldice if that helps anyone out. Have room for 3 and will coordinate with Wayne.

Hi Wayne, can you please give directions to trail head? Will most likely meet you all there so I can be home to see kids off to school and then get back into town as early as possible.
    Thanks! :)

From your area just get on 22x keep going past Spruce Meadows and stay on 22 which goes past the Bragg Ck. turnoff ,at this point its called hiway 66,once you get past Elbow Falls there is a small parking area to your right Called Powderface, park there.

I will be at the A&W and hope this is a good spot to carpool. Kinda confused if its there or an LRT.. hopefully this works out and someone can squeeze me in :-)

    October 7, 2013

    • wayne

We will be leaving from the A+w and form a carpool there.

Hi Wayne -- sorry, as usual I didn't read all the comments. Okay, I'll meet you at the trailhead. What time? 9? 9:15? thanks again!

    October 7, 2013

      Probably around 9:30 am

Hi Wayne: Would you mind making a stop at the Cinnamon Spoon (Bragg Creek) and I can meet you there? What time? I'll be bringing my dog, Timber (on a leash). Thanks!

  • David M.

On Saturday we went on the Foran Grade hike and I was wondering how this hike is compared to that.

    October 6, 2013

    • Lynne C

It would be similar, David but stretched out over a longer distance.... you'd be experiencing the Elbow River Valley instead of the SHeep River Valley

      October 7, 2013

    • David M.

Thanks Lynne, I am concerned with the length of the hike combined with the elevation and do not want to be a straggler, holding everyone back.

      October 7, 2013

  • Joe G.

I can drive by LRT Somerset west parking lot to pick up anybody who plans to carpool. My Titan truck can take 3 additional passengers. Or if anyone offers carpool at that station, I can leave my truck there and wait for the ride.

    October 7, 2013

  • Erika J.

Wayne and I will be driving together from A+W. I can take 1 more person (2 max) in my suby as I'm bringing my dogs in the back so there will need to be room for packs and boots up front.

    October 7, 2013

    • Yoka E.

Hi Erika! I will meet up at A+W as well. Could drive (I drive a truck), but would like to carpool. I'm good with dogs. Are you full, or is there room for me?

      October 7, 2013

  • Sabrina P.

Will anyone be driving from Shouldice? Id like to tagalong/carpool etc. If nobody will be leaving from Shouldice then I might just go down to the A+W as well. Thanks!

While this hike is not a high elevation hike please come prepared for winters like conditions by bringing warmhat/hood.gloves,gaiters if you have them waterproofed boots. The last few hikes I have organized we have run into snow and cold windchill at the higher elevations.

Actually, Shouldice would be even closer for me than the lrt. What time would you like to meet at Shouldice and carpool, Jamie? 7.30? And whereabouts specifically?

    October 3, 2013

  • Jamie

Anyone want to meet at Shouldice and carpool?

    October 3, 2013

  • Jamie

I will be coming along 16th Ave NW

    October 2, 2013

  • wayne

anybody in NW it would be better to drive down the hiway 1 to the Bragg Ck. turnoff, proced thru Bragg Creek to hiwayy66 turn right and go just past Elbow Falls to the Powderface parking lot on your right.Anyone coming on the LRT get off on the east side of the Somerset/Bridlewood station, Wendy/timHortons side)When you get their text me and will pick you up.

    October 2, 2013

  • Denise

Hi Wayne - I will be coming from the NW and would like to meet at the trailhead. From what I could find online, it looks like the trailhead is just past Elbow Falls and would be on the right side of the road. Am I right? Is it the first turnoff past Elbow Falls? Also, what time do you think you will be arriving at the trailhead? Please let me know. Thank you.

    October 1, 2013

  • Sabrina P.

hi! if we need another car, i can drive. otherwise, i would love to just stop by the lrt and head out in a carpool. thank you!

  • Lisa S.

a Thursday !! argh. The one weekday I have something else.

    October 1, 2013

  • Susan M.

I would love to come, but have to drop my daughter off at school at 8:50 in the NW. Where do you start this hike and what time do you think you would be there? Thanks
