Winter Hiking and Snowshoeing 101

Just because it's Cold and Snowy doesn't mean we stop the hiking season. We Adapt! As a matter of fact some of our most fun trips are winter trips. And in a country where we have 6 or more months of wintry climate we make the most of it. This is an extension of the Hiking 101 seminar but feel free to join even if you haven't done that seminar.

Some of the topics we will cover are:
Winter Trip Ratings
Clothing and Equipment
Hypothermia and Staying Warm
Books and Maps etc.
Snowshoe 101

and more.

This seminar is offered through The Slow and Steady Adventure Company.

I love when I get groups like this one that have lots of questions. This way I know what needs to be answered and can incorporate those answers into future seminars. That said if any of you still have questions please feel free to contact me anytime and I'll reply asap.
See you all all the "winter" trails soon.

Hi Michelle. I live further out Crowchild Trail and will be driving by Crowfoot LRT and could pick you up there. Or perhaps you already have a ride with Alen? I didn't completely understand his message and didn't see confirmation. If not this event, I can offer you a ride another time if needed.

Hi Michelle. I'll be leaving in 10 to 15 minutes. Do you have an email address or phone number I can reach you on??

      December 10, 2013

    • Michelle :.

Hello, Lynn, sorry I don't think I will go now. Thank you very much though! I sent an email to you as well about my number! :)

Hello, sorry I will be be able to attend this time!

Hello, this is Michelle. I live in NW, and it will take me about an hour and half to go to the Marlborough Community Centre as I rely on transit. So I am just wondering is anyone attending living close to NW and would be able to give me a ride? I live in Hawkwood, close to Crowfoot station. I can meet wherever.
    Thanks!!
    Michelle :)

Hey Andy, may I get a tip? What do you do when the windchill is below -30 (like today)? I was running this evening on the streets fearing that otherwise I will get frostbites on the face. And it might have been f̶u̶ very close.

I have to agree with Mike, Catalin. Exposed flesh can freeze in minutes. If you have a really runny nose maybe a scarf would be a better option as you can wrap it more loosely around your face. For extreme cold the ski goggles are also a great idea. It's best just to minimize your exposure as much as you can and try to duck into public places along your route to warm up from time to time.

By the way I personally do not like taking trips out if it is more than -20C. It is up to the other organizers if they wish too.

Cover your face... stay inside... move to Mexico... Google for a tip... ask Andy...

When do we have to pay by and do we have to do it online?

    December 1, 2013

    • Andy D.

It's fine to pay cash at the seminar.

Is this a hike on Tues. Dec 10th, or a seminar about winter hikes?
