HIKE TO HA LING PEAK

Let's celebrate DST and the return of longer days with a hike up Ha Ling Peak.It is a popular hiking trail just outside Canmore.Its short ,only a little over 6km return but brutely steep with over 819M. of elevation.It offers awesome views of the town of Canmore and the Bow Valley.It is not classified as a sramble but there is loose scree to go over,above the treeline.If you sign up for this hike please make sure you have a level of physical fitness to do it,otherwise please do not sign up. We won't be speed demons but expect people to be able to walk as a group in a reasonable steady pace.We will take lots of short breaks for water and to catch our breath on the way up.

What to bring;

ICERS WILL BE REQUIRED!

Your backpack with lunch,snacks with 2 liters minimum of water,hiking boots ,jacket and other hiking gear you use such as poles etc.Might be a good idea to have runners or sandels to change out into after the hike,also if your boots are wet and muddy.Depending on the amount of people signing up we will form a car pool at Shoudice.Please bring cash to pay your driver for gas if riding.Anyone going directly to the trail head go to the Goat Creek parking lot on the Smith-Dorrian road on the way to the Canmore Nordic Centre.Probably be there around 10:30 a.m. If you have any questions about this hike or about gear you can email thru the site or call or text me at[masked]-6352.No dogs or guests on this hike.

Not mandatory but always fun is munchies and beverages at the Georgetown Inn after the hike!

    Great safety decision to not do Hai Ling because of avalanche conditions. We went to Barrier Lookout instead and it was a great day for all. 5 stars.

    Prudent change to Barrier Lake due to avalanche danger was well received by the group and was very good.

    Too funny.....I ended up on a Barrier on Saturday. Wind was like 100km/hr on top and coming past the lake. How was it on Sunday?

      It was actually calm when we topped out but a storm quickly blew in after that.

    What a great day! My first hike with Slow & Steady was amazing. Deb and Andy thank you very much. I'll be out soon again if you'll have me. :) I met some great people and tried out my new crampons. Hai Ling - well maybe my 4th try will be the one where it actually happens!

    Ha Ling just wasn't meant to be on this day. Barrier Lookout turned out to be a good alternative and everyone had a great day. Thanks everyone, lots of fun.

    Sorry have to back out. May Spring be sprung upon you all.

    Hey, anyone know the condition towards the summit? I'm debating on bringing snowshoe or just use micro spike.

      Ray, You can bring both if you like but I doubt you will need the snowshoes. There is scree after the tree line and the trail is well used. Icers/microspikes are required to be able to participate in the hike so you will have to have those to be able to come on the hike.

    I am in Banff at the weekend so I will see you at the trailhead.

    HI Everyone....Andy has begged me ( LOL ) to chnage the time of meeting on Sunday morning. People who are car pooling, please meet Andy at Shouldice at 9:00a.m. I will meet everyone at the trailhead at 10:00/10:15a.m. Please remember we spring forward one hour on Saturday night so adjust your clocks and alarms accordingly. Some of us will go to the Georgetown Inn and Pub for beverages and munchies after the hike....its a great place so please join in if you can! Temperatures will be wamer than they have been but be prepared for a cold and windy summit! Happy trails and see you all on Sunday!
