CANYON CREEK ICE CAVES-S5

This hike is a which involves a walk 5.9km. walk down a closed off paved road and then a short scramble like approach about 1km. up a steep section to the ice cave. The caves 494 M of passageways beyond the great hall had been all explored by the 1970's.The cave stays at a constant -5C year round.I done this hike 3 times last year and it remains one of my favourites, because each time you go things could be different inside the cave.

Location: Ings Mine parking lot 16 km. west of Bragg Creek on Hwy.66

Round trip. 14km.

Elevation:350M

Hiking Time 4-5 hrs not including time exploring cave.

Difficulty S5 because of the off trail scramble like approach to the cave entrance. It is a short section which is steep, but not really that difficult. If your not sure what S5 means look on the website for the ratings.

Required Equipment:Good boots,ROCK HELMET(no other helmet type),Head lamp with backup batteries, hiking poles, warm clothes(dress in layers)Micro spikes are highly recommended for steep part up and down.Bring your pack with lunch, snacks and water. Rock helmets can be bought at M.E.C.starting at around $40,or rented there and at the Uof C.WE WILL BE MEETING ON THE EAST LRT PARKING LOT(Wendys/Tim Horton side, so grab your cup of Tim's BEFORE we leave. There are some good videos of the cave on U-tube. If you have any questions or concerns about gear or this hike you can contact me thru the site or text/call me at[masked]-3790.We can do a post hike stop at Bragg Creek at the Powderhorn saloon for a snack and refreshment.
