When I went to climb Wasootch not too long ago I spotted this mountain across from the Wasootch Creek area day use parking. I followed as we kept climbing. It definitely caught my attention as a potentially awesome peak. After some lengthy research I found the name of the mountain (well lack thereof). It appears to be part of Mount McDougall but only the peak at the NW of it. The coordinates of it are [masked], [masked]. I could not find any trip reports for this peak, so this will be an exploratory trip. This trip is estimated as a moderate scramble / very strenuous hike. Moderate scramble is not quite the same as moderate hike. Hands-on climbing will be involved.  Buck-whacking will also likely be involved. We will be returning the same way we ascended.

** RSVPs will open March 30 @8:00pm **

Picture I took from across hwy 40. (Top)

This is the approximate route we will be aiming for (google earth)

It was a great day with great, and very fashionable, people :-). I loved the deep snow and unbroken trail. I can still see Phil kneeing his way through the snow without poles or gloves :-). I'll get my pictures up soon - it's just been too good a weekend and haven't got to it yet.

Taras, (woops, I think I accidentally deleted your comment). There are MANY routes up this ridge (it's a long one). Some of which are listed. I did take a look in his book and could not find this particular route. I'll take a second look though.

Veronica, I just mentioned that this peak has the commonly accepted name: Wasootch Peak. The standard route is up SW Ridge, which is just a hike.

Are we approaching from Hwy 40 or from Wasootch Creek? Spirko calls it Wasootch Peak and has a trip report

That's one is little further south than the one we're attempting (but seriously close - I guess you could call it the same thing). It's also a southern approach whereas we're planning a northern approach.

The peak actually called Mount Layale. Ask Layale or Doug... It's on his map. :P
