Horseshoe Canyon- Drumheller OT3

RSVP opens May 11, 2014  at 8 PM. Horseshoe Canyon in the Red Deer River Badlands has a number of easy walking trails that provide an interesting walk through geological history. It's open scenery very different from the usual Alberta mountain hike.

It's about a 60 meter descent into the canyon

There are a number of visible trails.

We'll go as far as we can, there are lots of options as well as side canyons to explore. It will be weather dependant though as betonite clay gets extremely slippery when wet. I'm sure we'll see crocus'es in bloom already and maybe even some wildlife. Bring an extra pair of shoes for the car, plastic bag for your boots if they are muddy and maybe a change of clothes for the car. You never know if you slip in the mud. It can get awful messy.

Suggested car pool fare is $20.00/passenger

This hike is weather dependent-not going if it is raining or snowing.

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers; I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this hike. You will also be asked to provide the name and phone number of an emergency contact. You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this hike with the group.

This turned out to be a wonderful day. Started out mucky but bone dry by the time we finished. So nice not to hike in knee deep snow for once. Nice to hike with some old friends and lots of new ones.

Forecast looks better. This is a go. Remember bring a garbage bag, change of clothes and clean pair of extra shoes for in the car.

    May 17, 2014

Do you have room for one more at Safeway just to at least get to our meet up point? It sounds like carpooling will be arranged there.

    May 15, 2014

    • Amie R

Okay sounds good, what's your vehicle look like and where will you park? So we should be there by 720am I guess?

Sorry I've been busy. We will meet in the NW corner of Deerfoot Mall. This is the part of the parking lot closest to Deerfoot and 64th. There is no more Sears ( used to be). My cell is[masked]-8565. Call do not text. Carpooling will be arranged from there.

I don't know if this was answered or not, but how does car pooling to Drumheller work? There's a few of us that are new, can someone tell us how it goes?

Most events have a carpool location. The location for the carpool for the event is Deerfoot Mall.

You just show up to the carpool location and rides are sorted out. We try to take as few vehicles to the hikes as possible, so we will fill up reliable vehicles from volunteer drivers.
Passengers help to cover the cost of gas and wear and tear on the driver’s vehicle. We have a suggested gas compensation that is based on the area the hike takes place. The suggested amount for this hike is $20.

Obviously some people will want to ride with friends, and that’s okay, but for my trips, I tend to discourage setting up the final carpool before the day of the event. People cancel last minute, and if a driver cancels, we can be left with a several people who don’t have a ride.

Instead, it is preferable to sort out carpooling with all willing drivers on the morning of the hike. Although this means that some cars may be left in a parking lot in Calgary, we won’t be short rides.

If you can’t make it to the carpool location, feel free to ask for a ride. Hopefully another hiker can pick you up at a location that is mutually convenient. Nobody is under obligation to get your to the meetup location though, and it can be tough to find a ride if you aren’t along anybody’s route….especially if it’s an early meetup!

Hi Kyle et al, I'm going to bail due to weather. I know, kind of lame, but I'll wait for a dry weekend for this one, I think. Thanks for trying again Andy!

So, I'm new to the group, how do we usually work out the car pooling needed? (I've 4 available seats)

Well, the guess I answered my own question... Truck is almost full with car poolers.... ;-)

      May 13, 2014

  • Andy D.

It will be muddy so bring a change of clothes and footwear and a garbage bag to put your dirty clothes in. Be respectful of your drivers vehicle and don't sit in it if you're covered in mud.

    May 13, 2014

  • Andy D.

Guess what , the forecast looks like CRAP. We'll go to Drumheller and have a day out irregardless of Horseshoe Canyon or not.

10-15C temp and 5-20mm of rain doesn't sound like crap to me... But I've been known to run outside for closer looks at thunderstorms...
