Lake Louise Double - S5 (Tower of Babel and Mount Fairview)

I am looking at taking a small group (6ish) of scramblers up two short scrambles in the Lake Louise area.

These two scrambles are interesting for different reasons. The Tower of Babel looks like a fun ascent and it should offer great views of the Morraine Lake area. Mount Fairview is famous for its "fair views".

Neither scramble will take long to complete, so it is hard to justify the drive for just one. Therefore, I'll be looking to do a double6i ascent. This will make for a pretty big day.

There will be an automatic waiting list for the event.

This event is not appropriate for beginners.

Total elevation gain: 1450 meters

Total Distance: 12.5 km

Estimated Time: 7-10 hours on trail plus 5 hours driving

Equipment requiredmicrospikes, helmet, hiking boots, mitts/gloves, toque, gaiters, hiking poles, sunglasses layered clothing, wind/water resistant jacket, headlamp with extra batteries, food and water. Ice axe is recommended.

Details, details...

Event Type: Quick Scramble

Event Duration: 2.5-4 hours on trail

Difficulty Rating: S5

Distance: 3.2 km

Elevation Gain: approximately 450M

Location: Trailhead is at the Moraine Lake Parking lot, 15 km from the Lake Louise townsite

Event Directions: From the meetup location, we will be heading west on Highway 1 to the Lake Louise exit. Cross the highway and head towards the Lake. The road to Moraine Lake will be on your left, and it is well signed.

Route Description: We will begin our trip on a hiking trail, but will soon leave the trail to ascend a rubble pile (scree cone) to a large gully. We will ascend the gulley to the top of the tower. Gulley's act as natural funnels for rockfall. Therefore, the group size for this scramble will be kept small and helmets are mandatory. Although technically easy, preference will be given to experienced scramblers who will be less likely to dislodge rocks.

Great call for the double Mike. Thanks to Anna for arranging furniture at Babel but next time please remember to leave the solar charger and remote. We were limited to one channel of Mt. Temple.
Only trouble on the hike was parking at Lake Louise but that did not stop us. Weather was great and resulted in a new tradition of post trip Blizzards.

Thanks to everyone in the group for such a great day, especially to Mike for organizing! The weather served us well and the views were "fair" from both Tower of Babel and Fairview.

I have a problem with my Achilles tendon and it isn't likely to be resolved by Sunday so I will very regretfully drop out. Otherwise it might only get me halfway there.

Tower of Babel is super fun and has a living room on the top, a couch and a tv. It offers wonderful views. It's a short, enjoyable scramble. The other one is very popular, steep hike with great views as well. It can be extended as there is a no name peak behind it, moderate to difficult scrambling, spectacular views from up top and fun reaching it!
