Goat Creek and Spray River - Moderate Cross-Country Ski - NO BEGINNERS!

Goat Creek and Spray River

Moderate Cross-Country Ski

18.7 km one way

Trailhead: Goat Creek Trailhead 8 km south of Canmore on Smith-Dorrien Road

We will start at the Goat Creek Trailhead located just outside the Banff park boundaries above Canmore and ski downhill most of the way to Banff.

We will need plenty of cars and drivers as we need to set up a vehicle shuttle. We will all drive to the Spray River West Trailhead and park half the vehicles there. Then we will drive to the Goat Creek Trailhead to and ski to Banff. We will proceed to pick up the cars at the Goat Creek Trailhead, then stop for hot chocolate in Canmore.

Indicate in the comments if you can drive and how many people you can take, both comfortably, and the max you can jam in for the vehicle shuttle. Anyone who does not indicate whether they are passenger or driver may be removed from the RSVP list. Car fare will be $25 since we are driving back and forth and up a steep hill. IF YOU ARE DRIVING, YOU MUST HAVE WINTER TIRES AS THERE IS A STEEP HILL TO CLIMB TO GET TO THE GOAT CREEK TRAILHEAD. This trip will not be possible without drivers, therefore priority for RSVP will be given to drivers. We will also need Park Passes.

This is not recommended for beginners. We will be skiing far away from any assistance and there is no way out except to proceed to either trailhead. Please ensure you have all the gear, wax, clothes, water, & food you need for a full winter's day in the wilderness. Please ensure you have proper equipment and know how to use it. Please ensure you are comfortable skiing down hills with steep sections.

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers, I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this event. You will also be asked for the name and phone number of an emergency contact. Please come prepared with this information.

You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this event with the group.

I can drive and park in banff but have a tiny car not good for the hill up from the Nordic centre. Rebecca maybe can drive. We both have park passes.

I don't have those boots, but there are other places you can rent from, such as the Outdoor Centre, U of C , or Rapid rent at Elbow and Heritage Dr. I
I can drive and have winter tires and a park pass. I can take 2 people.

Hi, I'm Nadina's delightful friend (her words) :)
I don't have any spare boots, but I do have a car with winter tires and a park pass, so I could drive. Car can fit 2 more people comfortably (have to fold one seat to accomodate skis), or 3 (or even 4) people if we can find another car to take the skis.

Hi guys, looks like we won't have enough drivers for the shuttle. If this is the case tomorrow, we will just ski at the Canmore Nordic Centre. You will need to purchase a day pass if this is the case.

    December 28, 2012

    • Jessica C.

Carfare to the Nordic Centre will be $15.00

I just called MEC, they are out of xcountry ski boots for sizes 37 and 38, therefore I can't go, unless anyone of you has a spare pair...please let me know.

    Hi Jessica,
Is 17.8k the total distance? What is the approx time to ski the total distance? I would like to know what the pace is so I have an idea whether this is for me or not. I have been skiing for 4 years consistently on the greens and the farthest I covered was 24k in Lake o'hara.
    Cheers.

    • Jessica C.

Hi Miriam, I think you'll be fine. Yes that is the total distance, and we will take it easy.

Hi Jessica: I would like to bring a friend but cannot figure out how to change my RSVP to a 1+. She is an avid snowshoer/skier and a delightful person who I'm sure would be an asset to the group. Would that be okay for Rebecca to attend. I see there are still two spots - I just can't figure out how to change my RSVP to the 1+ guest. Sorry for the bother!

Hi Nadina, I usually don't like guests as I'm not into surprises... Bit since you asked so nicely & your friend sounds so awesome...

Hi Jessica & Andy: Thank you so much. I know you will like Rebecca - she is a delight - we play in the same music group together - she is a mum & from France originally. I'm sure she will be an asset to the group this day. Thank you!
