Kicking Horse Trail (Yoho Park) - Intermediate XC Ski (No Beginners)

Natural Bridge to Otterhead River

on the Kicking Horse Trail -

Intermediate XC Ski (No Beginners)

Sunday, February 3, 2013 - 7:30 AM

The meeting of the Kicking Horse, Emerald, and the Amiskwi Rivers is a special place in Yoho's Montane zone.

  • Distance: 14 Km Return
  • Elevation: 1220 m
  • Height Gain: 60 m
  • Time: 4 - 5 hours on at a moderate pace
  • Location: Turn north off the Trans Canada Hwy onto the Emerald Lake access road, 4 km west of Field.  Continue 1.5 km and park at the Natural Bridge parking lot.  In Yoho National Park
  • RSVP's open Monday, January 14, 2013 at 7:00am

From the Natural Bridge, ski 2.4 km along the road down a gradual hill, past the Emerald River to the Amiskwi River bridge. Cross the bridge and continue left along this abandoned fire road for 4.1 km to the Otterhead River. This is a very nice half day tour.  Most of the trail runs through forest but there are a few open views along the way.

We will stop for a light meal or coffees/snacks on the way back from skiing.

You must come prepared for this ski with water, food, multiple clothing layers, toque, & mitts - all appropriate for x-country skiing. You must know how to use your gear & be able to wax your skis (unless you have waxless).

Carpool fare will be $25.00 per passenger for this trip, as this trip is within Yoho National Park, park passes are required.

Waivers: As per the new policy for waivers, I will bring the group waiver form with me to both the Calgary Meetup location and the trailhead. You must sign it before you will be allowed to go on this event. You will also be asked for the name and phone number of an emergency contact. Please come prepared with this information.

You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this event with the group.

Conditions are looking very favorable for our ski on Sunday!! I am officially confirming that it is a go. Please don't last minute cancel. Any cancellation within 24 hours, without extenuating circumstances, is a last minute cancel in my eyes...

All the info you need regarding trail conditions, avalanche risk, and weather can be found by clicking the links from the Parks Canada page. http://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/tcond/cond_e.asp?oPark=100438

Personally I'd rather ski... & usually it's the half-time show that tempts me (I wouldn't have missed Madonna), but Beyonce... Gag me with a spoon!!!

She'll probably lip sync anyway. I'm hoping for a wardrobe malfunction ( Janet Jackson) Don't worry I'll tell you all about it if I even watch the half time show. Might have to go on a beer run. :)

Perhaps some resistance is due to the Ice Magic Festival @ Lake Louise drawing a number of people out the weekend before, including me.

Does Sunday work for you Moca Joe?

      January 14, 2013

  • Jessica C.

There has been an underwhelming response to this awesome trip. Does the Sunday work better for you guys? I could change the date to the Sunday if it works better for most people.

Saturday or Sunday will work for me as long as there is advance, like a week, notification. I am looking forward to this trip, hope it'll push thru

Can I get a ride with you, Jessica ?

Hi I would love to join you but am unsure what no beginners vs intermediate means. I have skied for years but am not an expert. I am strong and determined though :D What do you think?

Perfect!! I just don't want to be explaining how to wax :)

Is this a track/set or AT trail ?

    December 10, 2012

    • Jessica C.

Yes, that's what I'm using. The exact rating for this trip is Easy Nordic Skiing 1, from Ski Trails in the Canadian Rockies, by Chic Scott. Easiest rating in the book, simplest avalanche terrain. The trail is likely to be track set or packed, & we should encounter lots of other skiers.

Wow, Thankyou for such a prompt response, Jessica (at 12 am) ! Btw: One of my bucket list trips is to either AT ski or snowshoe up to Takakkaw Falls from the gate. I think that would vista wise incredible.
