Winter Hike Grass Pass/Bull Creek Hills & Potluck RSVP Jan 7th 7:00 AM

  • Jan 12, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please read the entire posting before RSVP'ing to be sure this hike is appropriate for you.

Itinerary & Description
Distance: 11-12km
Elevation Gain: 790m
Event Duration: 5 - 6 hours excluding driving and optional potluck following the hike.
Difficulty Rating: Intermediate (OT3 rating) This will be a combined trail/off-trail hike.
While most areas in the mountains are still covered in snow, this area between the foothills and mountains is ideal for off-trail hiking in almost any month of the year with 360 views.

From the Sentinel Recreation Area, we'll hike up the Pack Trail Coulee (425m) to Grass Pass. At the pass we'll explore two areas: Fir Creek Point and the celebrated Boundary Pine, and also the Bull Creek Hills. You'll have a good view of the Holy Cross Mountain and Mt. Head. Our return will head further off-trail southwest from Bull Creek summit and descend the ridge (light scrambling) towards the beginning of Fir Creek. We will then follow the creek out to the highway. From there it will be approximately a 1.3km walk back along the road.

We won't be fast and furious, neither will we dawdle, lollygag, loiter or trudge...
"there's a great moment in the movie "a Knight's Tale" where Chaucer describes Trudging. "To trudge: the slow, weary, depressing yet determined walk of a man who has nothing left in life except the impulse to simply soldier on."
So that everyone enjoys the day our pace will be MODERATE, not too fast and not too slow....we will be intentional, focused, motivated, inspired and "slow and steady" to the top.

The Potluck:
You are all invited.
Please indicate in your RSVP answers if you'd like to stay on for the Potluck following the hike. A separate email will be sent to you with details on where and what to bring.

Directions: Shawnessy Starbucks in Chapters close to Empire Movie Theater (Shawnessy LRT within easy walking distance) to Sentinel Recreation Area:

• From Shawnessy, take Macleod Trail south to Okotoks Hwy 2A.
• Through Okotoks turn right (west) on Hwy 7 and continue to Black Diamond.
• At the four way Stop turn left (south) on Hwy 22 and continue to Longview.
• In Longview, take the first right (west) onto Hwy 541.
• Continue approximately 30km until you reach the Sentinel Recreation Area, which will be on the left.

Who can attend: Members, no children, guests or dogs for this hike. This is suitable for intermediate hikers and your ability to maintain a steady moderate pace for the hike is essential.

actually it was a musing regarding Tobi's spiritual lessons from the mole.... "are you truly listening to others and circumstances".... "are you eating right"? I listened and decided to have frozen moca cheese cake for breakfast again today :-p

Birds singing, mice snowshowing, and bears prowling...its my story and I'm sticking to it... :-p Today felt like an amazing adventure with 10 amazing people.... started off so cold I thought we were going to parish but thankfully that lasted only about 10 minutes.... by the afternoon it was so nice it was hard not to find a cozy snow bank and have a snooze under the amazingly warm sun.....creation is not almost like paradise it really is paradise....thank you everyone for making this so special:D

It was a mole I saw it on Nancy's snowshoe. She was in front of me. :)
      Spiritual meaning of mole:
Teaches expression of nature and sensitivity one surroundings, alertness and awareness of what is happening around you, aids in self-introspection. shows how to find hidden parts of your spiritual being, teaches to listen and feel carefully while using intuition. Mole teaches lessons of grounding and working toward a goal. Are you truly listening to others and circumstances? Listen beyond the obvious, trust your intuition on this. Are you eating right?

    "Veni, vidi, vici"
It was so good! The hard work up the trail with the new snow to the top was so worth it. The views from the Pass were beautiful with the fresh snow in the mountains all around. We ventured to the Boundary Pine - took pictures and then carved a new trail down the valley to exit out Fir Creek. The Potluck...awesome, fun, lot's of great food and good conversation. We should do it again sometime.

Never mind. I read all the emails. We are meeting at 8:00 am tray as opposed to meeting at 7am back in time five days ago (based On event title)

I'm confused. Are we meeting at 7am or 8am?

I did believe I'd signed up last week but don't see my name! Anyway, just had foot X-ray today and would not be able to come this weekend anyway. If I was # 13 ( I only counted 12), then this will give someone waiting a spot! Suggest we might take a few more on hikes, as the full number of people signed up must be on average only about 70 % of the "Yes"-es , no?
Cheers! Have fun! Looking forward to snowshoeing again though, but hopefully meeting in my end of the woods at 9- Shouldice!!

Hi, I am really interested in this one. I am new to Calgary and haven't hiked in snow before. But I did long distance hiking back in China(eg. over 20 kms per day). So I am wondering can I join this one? Thank you
