Hello intrepid sailors!
We are planning our first group sail to Egmont Key this year. Egmont Key is a Florida State Park that is only accessable by boat. There is a lighthouse that dates back to 1858, and also the remains of a fort from the Spanish-American War. Part of the island is a wildlife refuge with many different types of seabirds. More info here: http://www.floridastateparks.org/egmontkey/
Of course, anyone with thier own boat is welcome to join us! Don't RSVP because those spots are for the sailors who need rentals. Do write in the comments that you are planning on joining us, and we can share contact information closer to the event. The closest put-in for a small sailboat is at Kingfish Boat Ramp on SR-64. more info here: http://www.mymanatee.org/home/government/departments/parks-and-recreation/boat-ramps/kingfish-boat-ramp.html
We will park close the Anna Maria Pier and carpool to Cap't Jack's to reduce the impact of cars at the launch site. Look for me in my red Prius just to the right of the AMI Pier. I'll collect the rental fee and have any "newbies" sign waivers. We will take several of the larger "small boats" out to Egmont Key...have a picnic, swim and walk around the island, and then return back to Bimini Bay. It is a several hour trip (depending on the wind), so we will start early at 9:30 am. Bring the usual stuff...lunch, drinks, water shoes, hat, sunscreen, and anything else that will make your time on the water enjoyable. A friendly reminder: the cost for the boat rental is $40 per person for the entire day. Brian of Bimini Bay Sailing is our meetup sponsor (thanks, Brian!), and gives our group a discount. Bimini Bay Sailing is a small operation, so Brian takes cash or personal checks only. Looking forward to our Egmont adventure...see y'all soon!!!
