Why does one take photos? Why does one feel the need not only to take those photos but share them as well? Local Winnipeg photographer Leif Norman says, "...photography is an endeavour that is fixed in the future. The photos are for our grandchildren, and the grandchildren of people we may never meet. The photos are a record of what has been and what has been lost, preserved in mute images. That is the true power of a camera. To see a photo of Paris in 1876. To see Albert Einstein stick out his tongue at you. To see stonehenge or the pyramids without ever having left Canada. To once again see the face of an old friend who died suddenly. We take pictures of now so the future can see into the past. It’s all quite metaphorical and philosophical but I think that it is a very powerful tool that should not be squandered."
Join us for a night with Leif where he'll talk about his philosophy on photography...what it means to be a photographer and why to engage in the art of photography. Leif is not only the official photographer for events such as the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival, but he is also the unofficial "city cultural photographer and record keeper." You can visit his blog HERE: http://www.leifnorman.net/
Here's the plan as we see it:
-6:15p - Arrive at 166 Osborne Street...parking is in the BACK LOT behind the radio station/Stellas/VitaHealth. It's okay to park in a spot that says "Reserved For Rogers Radio" (no need to park in the paid lot). Come to the BACK DOOR with the silver domed awning...someone will be there to let you in (doors are locked). **PLEASE ARRIVE NO LATER THAN 6:30p**
-6:30p SHARP - Leif will begin his chat...this is a very informal night so if you have any questions at all please do ask. Feel free to bring any examples of your work (if you're comfortable doing so) for comments and critiques.
-8:30p - Quick tour of the radio station, for those who are interested
-9:00p - Wrap up and head home
What you need to bring:
-$2 meetup fee
-examples of your work, should you wish to share it with Leif
-camera, if you would like a quick tour of the radio station (it's not the MOST exciting place, but the on air studios might make for some good shots...I look at it every day so the novelty has worn off! HA!)
**DUE TO THE LIMITED AMOUNT OF SPACE, GUESTS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT THIS MEETUP**
