Wake Up And Smell The Orchids

Snap Happy member Kim is planning on attending the 2014 Manitoba Orchid Society 2014 Show & Sale at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, and would love some company!  For details on the show, please visit http://www.manitobaorchidsociety.ca/

Here's the plan as we see it in our heads:
11:30a - Meet at the main doors of the Conservatory to collect meetup fees
11:45a - Pay admission fee and start shooting!
1:00p - Meet back at main doors...those who wish to stay to continue shooting may, those who wish to head out can do so as well!

What you need:
$2 meetup fee (to be paid to Kim)
$7 entrance fee to Orchid show (to be paid the day of the event, not through PayPal)
Camera, of course!

I left this show with a bad taste in my mouth. As a person with a tripod, I became aware of polite then impolite signals from organizers about having a tripod present. After using a tripod for about 30 minutes, i started toting mine and could no longer see any other tripod in sight. It was over the next 30minutes, I become aware of public remarks that tripods should not be allowed. Two older ladies were very loud expressing their opinions amongst themselves. A short time later, a male organizing volunteer followed me giving me the snake eye and declared tripods were not allowed. I pretty much told him to stop making up rules and go bother someone who cares. I wasn't expecting this behavior from mature flower growers, but more appalled with show organizers responding to opinionated complaints when they can see there are no problems at all. I realize Winnipeg is a rude city, but the worst offenders are the people you least expect. I have reservations about returning next year.

Whoops! Hitting "enter" saves instead of creating a new paragraph. Anyway, in my opinion the traffic snarls were due to the attendance, which was hearty, but which wasn't so bad that people couldn't flow. Tripods were not the problem--especially not Ian's because he knows what he's doing. And an overwhelming number of the general public attendees (not just Snap Happy members) were taking pictures in front of each display. Congestion happened because it was an event with high turnout, and that's all. Again, Ian, I'm really sorry. And FWIW to anyone else who is interested: The growers' org has offered to invite us for a morning session next year if anyone's interested, so that the tripods are out of the way of the regular foot traffic.

I had to be very brief with only 1000chars. The organizers were polite at first informing of an hour for cameras an hour before the public comes enters (yeah!). I didn't see any congestion in traffic, everyone was moving fine and even politely moved away for photos to be taken! I didn't understand the change in mood later but maybe I was out of the busy areas.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
