Snowshoeing Paradise (Mount Rainier)

Hi all, due to the winter strom warnings for all of the Cascades this weekend, I am rescheduling this meetup for next weekend. I am sorry for all of the changes on this one. The weather is not cooperating. I do not want wan to take a bunch of new snowshoe-ers up into the mountains in potentially dangerous conditons. Sorry if this impacts your RSVP status. For those who canceled for this week, if you are free next Saturday, email me seperately and I will get you added back on. We'll leave the location as Mount Rainier and make a final call next week. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Mount Rainier is one of the only places that has enough snow for snowshoeing right now. We will head up to Paradise to snowshoe there. I changed the meetup time to 8 am for this Saturday to allow for the longer drive. Currently, all cars are required to have snow chains in the car, so if you plan to drive, please make sure you have chains and know how to use them. I can drive, so we need at least two other drivers. You need to rent snowshoes ahead of time if you don't have them already. Please be at the Greenlake Park and Ride at 8 if you want to go.

You have to be able to walk 4 miles easily. Snowshoes will change your gate and make hiking more strenuous.

We’ll meet at the Greenlake Park and Ride (I-5 & NE 65th St. - 6601 Eighth Ave. NE 411). At our meeting point we will figure out who is driving with whom.

Each car needs a $15 for park entry and snow chains. Please note in your RSVP if you are a driver. We’ll figure out riding/driving at the transit center. Riders, please consider donating $5 to your driver to help cover gas and the park entry.

What to bring: Backpack with water and food, camera, suntan lotion, sunglasses, extra gloves, layers of clothing, and waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. I will supply the map. You can also bring a Green Trails: Mount Rainier Paradise 270s.

I'll update closer to the time about road/weather/avalanche conditions and change the location/date if necessary.

NOTE: Please be on time since I will leave on time. Because there is limited room for trips like this, please cancel with enough time for me to give your spot to someone else. I have a No Show and last minute cancellation policy for events like this. I will remember who cancels on me last minute when taking people for future trips.

Just received an email notification of a conversation with Sarah and Joe, although I don't see it listed here on the Meetup site. Sounds like those who want to go from the Wait List might consider just showing up at the park and ride tomorrow and we figure it out from there. I will print out the maps Paul linked in an earlier message. We'll need to have drivers with chains.

    January 17, 2014

    • Tina

I'd like to showing up from wait list. But I don't have car with chains. Will that be ok?

      January 17, 2014

    • Donna

That's what I'm doing Tina. My car won't make it in the mountains, nor do I have chains. I hope there's enough people with chains who show up in the morning. I'm heading to REI to get a map that was recommended by REI parks' desk today.

      January 17, 2014

  • Monika

Really looking forward to meeting everyone and to playing in the snow! I'll bring my National Parks pass and gas money, hoping that some kind souls with more rugged cars will volunteer to drive.

    January 17, 2014

  • Donna

To everyone on the wait list, I am still waiting to hear back from Sarah. I need to get some questions answered about what trail we are suppose to take, if different from her group, before I create a new event. If anyone knows the area well and would like to contact me with a suggestion on an easy to intermediate level trail at Paradise, you can contact me at [masked]. The issue is, I don't know what specific trail Sarah plans to take. I assume we will meet at the same park and ride as Sarah's group and carpool together. We would need people on the wait list to volunteer to drive and take 2-3 people. My car isn't good for the mountains.

Stay tuned. This discussion may be happening too late, with it being mid-afternoon Friday. Perhaps just one car load of 4 people could go from the wait list. That would make it easy.

    January 17, 2014

  • Donna

Sarah, I am sorry for not getting in touch before now. I am willing to be an assistant organizer so more people from the wait list can go. You said I need to create a separate event so this can happen? I've not done that before, plus it might be confusing to people who see it as two separate events. Can you get help from the Meetup office to see how to just add me to this event?

I'd like to visit with you by phone about the game plan, like if we're taking separate trails if we have two groups, or if you want me to just be the person at the end to make sure no one moving slowly has been left behind. Please contact me at [masked] -- please send your phone number so we can talk about this.

    Thanks,
    Donna

So excited for this! My brother is going to come along (currently he's on the wait list) but with any luck we'll be able to squeeze him in! Hi all, the weather forecast looks good for Saturday, so I hope everyone can still make it to the meetup. As I said before, while I only want to be responsible for those who RSVP'd Yes, anyone on the waitlist who wants to show up at the Park and Ride to form a group is welcome to do so. See you all at Greenlake Park and Ride at 8 on Saturday. Bring snowshoes and a backpack with snacks and dry clothes. It is supposed to be a bit warm, so we may get wet as stuff melts.

Oh I see. I misunderstood your first statement thinking you wanted to go midweek this week but could not go on the on the 12th. haha I was a little confused as the date for this one was the 11th but changed to the 18th. Throughout the season I can go on a Tuesday with you when you are available.

    January 11, 2014

  • Sarah J

Hi all, I can't be at two places at once, but maybe one of the other organizers would be willing to host a meetup on the same day. You could also ask to become an assistant organizer and plan your own trips (which is what I did). This meetup is capped due to trail ettiquette. A larger group would not work for an outing like this. Just keep your fingers crossed for snow...we may have to change the location or date on this one if the forecast doesn't improve. I'm with you on the snow fix though...

For tomorrow the wind gusts in the forecast have changed from 50 mph to 24 mph but it is still the worst conditions in the forecast. As long as you stay low I think you will be fine. :)

    January 10, 2014

  • Monika

Hi there, I still really want to go, and as long as conditions are just snowy as opposed to extremely dangerous, I'd vote for doing this. Paradise is gorgeous in the winter. I don't have a 4wd, but I do have a parks pass and happy to pay for gas...

    January 10, 2014

  • Donna

Sarah, I could have sworn this trip was to Twin Lakes. Was that the original designation for Saturday. I was surprised to see it's Paradise. Maybe you switched due to lack of snow at Twin Lakes.

I just noticed the weather forecast for Saturday, at Mt. Rainier National Park. It's going to be HEAVY SNOW and HIGH WINDS of 24 mph. Is that going to be OK for our trip and for safety on the mountain? It's dropping to 16 degrees by night.

    January 8, 2014

    • Sarah J

Donna, yes I changed the location due to snow conditions. I will make the final call on weather and road conditions Friday. I agree the weather forecast looks bad and I will most likely have to reschedule to next week. We'll see how it goes. Sometimes these things don't materialize.

      January 9, 2014

    • Manoj

Hey Sarah, so how's it looking for this trip tomorrow with the weather? I'll have to rent snowshoes today for this, so would be good to have a confirmation that we're still on for this. I do have a 4WD and chains.

      January 10, 2014

  • Rebecca De Grand D.

While I have never done this trail or snowshoed up at Steven's the following trail may be a good option if the weather conditions are favorable. http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report.2014-01-02.1020748493

    IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR SATURDAY!
There is an advisory on the mountain for heavy winds and snow. The chance of precipitation is 100% and gusts of wind up to 50 mph. It is actually the worst day of the 10 day forecast. Here is the direct link to the Mt Rainier weather forecast: http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Mount+Rainier+Natl+Park+WA+USWA0287:1:US

    January 9, 2014

    • Rebecca De Grand D.

For those of you who are planning to go there still, please be very careful and allow yourself extra driving time, bring goggles, all your "essentials" which include warm clothes and layers, poles are a very good idea, and your will definitely need snow chains for your tires. Good luck!

Last weekend in sun and clear weather with a high of 37 degrees, we had to put on our down jackets when we reached panorama point at 6800 feet. Plus it was very wind that high. Below the point it was warm in the sun and we were able to trek in just a heavy weight fleece top, light gloves, and a buff headband for me.
With snow you will need rain covers for your packs and gaiters.

Greetings, I'm new to Meetup and this group. It appears there is a long waiting list - is it possible to create / break up into a new group for this trip? It seems very popular and I'm guessing we're all dying to have a snow-fix. What's the etiquette for setting up another group? Thanks

Rebecca/Hardik: Please check your emails. Haven't heard from Kartik yet. Will add him when he replies with his email address.

      January 9, 2014

    • Rebecca De Grand D.

Sonik, thanks! I emailed you back. I will double check the forecast but I still think the best plan is for us to do the Commonwealth Basin. Rainier is an all day trip and I am uncertain if the conditions will be good up there especially if we have not snowshoed together before and Karthik if coming has never done it before. In snow conditions I consider that more advanced. We left last weekend from home at 8:30 am and got home at 7:30 pm. But I would very much LOVE to plan an outing there when there is a good forecast. The snowing at the mountain at a higher altitude will really slow down on travel time from the gate to the Inn and back.

      1 · January 9, 2014

  • Rebecca De Grand D.

Wow! That sucks! I would have totally been up for Mt Rainier had I known you were going there. Are you sure because it is snowing all week in the pass and should be prime. I am not so certain it will be good conditions at Rainier on Sunday. I have been in white outs up there which would be difficult for beginners. It is likely to be white out conditions as the forecast is constant snow over here. And you will definitely need chains for your vehicles as we did last weekend in perfect conditions.

    January 9, 2014

    • Rebecca De Grand D.

Oh, and it gets really windy too so it is a very good idea to bring ski goggles that we use in heavy snow, white outs, and wind. For beginners if you have them in the group, I recommend doing Reflection Lakes and not Panorama Point which is more advanced. In the visitor center they post the conditions for the day, have a map of the routes, can tell you the avalanche danger, and recommend the best and safest area to do an outing. Plan on a 3-4 hour drive to get there depending on where you are leaving from. From our home in Redmond it took us 4 hours there and 3 hours back. On mapquest it said a 2 hour 14 minute drive from Ashford. They estimate a half hour drive from the gate to Paradise visitor center but it took as about an hour (1 bathroom stop, stop to put on chains, and then slow going on icy conditions following a trail of cars.

      January 9, 2014

    • Rebecca De Grand D.

The gate closes at 5 pm and they post you MUST leave no later than 4:30 pm but it took longer than a half hour from Paradise to the gate to exit the park with no stops. So figure all that into your plans.

Sarah, there's more than double the number of people on the wait list than attending. Is it possible to add 1-2 more assistant organizers for this so people can go. Hey all, I just wanted to send a quick note that the meetup details changed. We are going to Mount Rainier now because there is not enough snow on Snoqualmie Pass. We are meeting at 8 am to account for the longer driving time. See you all this Saturday. Anyone who wants to show up at the park and ride to arrange their own group at the same time as us is more than welcome.

Here is the forecast for the week at the Pass: http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:98068.1.99999

It is snowing all week! Yay!! Bring it on! :D

    January 8, 2014

  • Rebecca De Grand D.

For those new to snowshoeing, you use your hiking poles but attach snow baskets on them. REI sells snow baskets in the pole section for the brands Black Diamond, Korpenelli and Leki, and REI. Poles help you with balance and going up steep terrain/hills. If you do not have hiking poles, downhill ski poles also work.
Just a tip for the newbies. ;-) If you have good balance and coordination, you probably do not need poles for Twin Lakes.

Hey if any of you are taking snowshoe trips to Mt Baker or Mt Rainier this year, count me in!!! I am very interested in outings at those 2 destinations. I have never been to Mt Baker snowshoeing but only hear raves about it. Last year was my first snowshoeing at Paradise at Rainier (twice) and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it! My preferred locations in the Snoqualmie corridor are Source Lake/Snow Lake trail, Commonwealth Basin, and Gold Creek is always fun and the easiest of the 3 trails.

So Paul do I understand correctly that you snowshoe on an unplowed road to get the the Mazama Ridge trail OR do you drive further down the road from the Paradise Inn to access it?

      January 7, 2014

    • A former member
      A former member

The road is unplowed, so you leave from the east of the Paradise lot. You can follow the road to Reflection Lakes for a very gradual (and fairly crowded on weekends) outing, or leave the "road" at the designated point and head up Mazama Ridge along with the telemark/backcountry skiers.

      January 7, 2014

  • Elli

    Hi Sarah,
Do we have to bring the snowshoe or if there a rental by the trail ?
    Thanks...

    January 7, 2014

    • Rebecca De Grand D.

From what I know, you are unable to rent shoes at that trail head location. It is not next to the rental hut at the ski hill (meaning not a convenient walk-able distance). Most that I have met since last March have their own snowshoes. For those I know that do not, they rent from REI (usually the Issaquah location if picking them up on the way out and is a convenient location to return off I 90 right afterward. Others have rented the night before from the REI location closest to where they live (Seattle or Redmond). There ARE snowshoe rentals available at the Snoqualmie Ski hill which you would have to drive to before the trail head meeting time. But I am sure the availability on the weekends is tight and I do not know what time they open or the cost (whether it is a better deal to rent from REI or out there).

    January 6, 2014

Are you planning to snowshoe the same trail as the groomed ski trail along lake Kachess? I have been there only once and that is the only trail I know of so I went "off trail" through the woods and along the lake which was mostly frozen over and out to the little island to appreciate the sunrise.
