LA Union Station, Disney Concert Hall – Photowalk

Meet at Union Station (or take the train, with me, from Irvine). We will explore the area around Olivera street, City Hall, Angle's Flight, Pershing Square, maybe the Garment and Jewelry Districts. It's a Wednesday, but the photo ops are always better, in this area, during the week. My train, back to Irvine, is about 4PM, but you can join us for any part of the day.

I will arrive at Union Station shortly after 10AM and shoot in the area until the those coming in at 11AM arrive.  About 11:15 we will leave the Info Kiosk, near the main entrance and make our way across the street to Olivera Street.  From there, we will head down Main Street (south), toward City Hall.  At 1st Street, we will turn right (west), past Parker Center toward the Disney Concert Hall )1st & Grand).  We may take a lunch/snack break in the small plaza across Hope Street (Hope and 1st) -- think Subway, coffee shop, etc., or bring some snacks.

From the Disney, we'll head south, toward Angel's Flight  (Between Hope and Hill and 3rd & 4th Streets).   We have several options, south of Angel's Flight, including the Jewelry and  Fashion Districts.

I doubt that we will go past Olympic Blvd.  The Orpheum Theater is on Broadway, near 9th St.  From this area, will will head back north, to Pershing Square and hop on the Metro for the short ride back to Union Station.  We will probably be at Pershing Square about 3-3:15, and get back to Union Station for a little more shooting, and 4PM trains.

I'll send my cell# to all who RSVP before 7AM, Wednesday.

For anyone interested, AAA does have a free tourist map of downtown LA that is very nice. I will be studying it in preparation for our next trip here. Hope to see you all again soon!

Hi Julie, yes, I am still going, as it is not supposed to rain until after we are home or on our way home. Hope you feel well enough to go tomorrow.

Hi Paul, I've never been downtown before. I'm taking an[masked] lens. Would a[masked] be overkill for where we will be? I'm not going to drag a tripod with me and would prefer traveling light. Any other suggestions? I also have a 35mm prime (52mm
    equivalent). Thanks

      Hi John,

So much of the answer is determined by your style and vision for the images. For street shooting, I sometimes prefer to take a wide angle lens so I can have maximum depth of field, and not have to worry about nailing perfect focus -- sort of shooting from the hip. Other times, I take an[masked] so that I can make individuals pop of the background by using a very narrow DOF.

Still on other occasions, I take just one prime lens and challenge myself to make a single focal length work in a variety of situations.

Having said that, I think you would get the most benefit and variety from the 18-105. The 300mm is, effectively, a 450 on your camera. Handheld, at that length, it is difficult to get sharp images, and the 55 is actually over 80mm, so you would be very limited, at the wide end.

If you prefer to travel light, the 35 is a 'normal' focal length on a crop sensor -- then you just 'zoom with your feet" :-)

      Paul

Thanks Paul. I anticipate the[masked] will meet the days needs nicely but feel guilty not being prepared for more. :-) I can bring more gear but get tired of carrying too much unneeded gear. The[masked] would only be brought in addition to the[masked], not in lieu of. Decision, decisions.
