Orange Empire Railway Museum Day Trip

I'm looking for a level of interest, more than a commitment to attend, since it is over four months away.

Those interested in carpooling would meet at one or two locations.  Others would just drive there on their own.    It is a very interesting place with rolling stock, car barns with storage and restoration activity of old train, street cars, and buses.  There are even train rides on weekends.  It is also a family friendly venue.

Here is a link to a gallery of shots that I took a couple of Summers ago.

RSVP only if you are interested.  No need to reply with a No, if you are not interested.  We'll nail down the details, depending on how many are up for it.

Access to the Museum Grounds is free, (except during certain special events). On regular weekends, an all-day pass to ride the trains costs $12 for adults, $8 for children 5-11, free for kids under 5.  A family pass (for members of one family, two adults and all children) is available for $40. Parking is always free.

There are 90+ acres so this definitely qualifies as a photo walk :-)  Of course, you don't have to walk every inch of it.

Thanks to John C. for suggesting this.

Very late notice, but worth the effort to try to take in. I attended a few years ago, and while there are more model trains than full-size ones, it is a fun event with lots of opportunities for picture taking.

For those interested the Fullerton train station will be hosting a free weekend event including a few trains to tour. Sorry for the late notice.

Gotta say I'm really enjoying looking through all of the posted photos so far. Some really great shots! Good eyes and sense of composition. I need to try to stick a little closer with different segments of the group, as my natural tendency is to strike out on my own and get lost in the picture taking. I will be posting some of my pictures in the next day or two. And while it did get a bit toasty out there, it was an excellent venue!

First time with the group, only met Doug and Allen, but they were great.

I don’t know who the other 2 or 3 people were that were with me, but we got a guided tour of the facility by one of the volunteers. It was completely unexpected. I could have wandered around for hours and not find half the places this person showed us along with the history of what was in each barn.

We are allowed to crawl over and in almost every car and engine that was there. That would never have happened had I just looked around on my own. For me it made just a sort of expected ordinary day turn into really special one.

There was still a ton of stuff to see. They had a night photo shoot the day before I am putting my name on any list to get in on it the next time it comes around. I can only imagine how wonderful some of those trolleys looked at night.

Interesting subject matter. I thought it was supposed to be a catered event. And the lunch company could have been better.

:-) I think that the caterer got on the wrong train. Next time, we'll put John C. in charge of refreshments :-)

It was only catered in first class. Unfortunately for you, Douglass, you ended up sitting in coach with the rif raf.

So, Douglass, that spam/pasta microwavable entree available in the gift shop just didn't do it for ya? :)

I plan on leaving Huntington Beach about 9AM. The grounds actually open at 9 and that would be better light, if you want to get there that early, but I can't get free any sooner. I will send my cell number to everyone who has RSVDed 'yes', on Saturday evening. While the grounds are large, there is a small gift shop, and I will try to be there at 11AM, so if you are roaming around, lets plan to meet then, or you are free to 'freelance'.

I am planning to try to be there at the opening time of 9am. I might also be able to pick you up on the way, depending upon your location and willingness to get up early. I plan to make it at least a half day day trip, and possibly longer, as I plan to also ride the steam train if it is running.

Railway Museum website indicates that steam locomotives only run on 3rd weekend of every month. I would suggest re-scheduling event to 3rd weekend in April, the 20th or 21st, to take advantage of that.
