Festival of Color

In India, Holi announces the arrival of spring and the passing of winter. Every nook and corner presents a colorful sight. Young and old alike are covered with colors (red, green, yellow, blue, black and silver). People in small groups are seen singing, dancing and throwing colors on each other. Though liquid colors are used in India (where it's warm) in California, they use dry color, which is better for photographers.

There will be non stop live music from great bands, yoga, mantras, dance, cuisine, and the throwing of dry colors on friend and foe alike. Countdowns & Color throws every two hours starting from noon - 8pm.

CARPOOLING: Fullerton Park & Ride at the corner of Magnolia and Orangethorpe, where the 5 and 91 meet. We'll leave at 11:00.

Folks can try to meet at 11:30 at will call. I would recommend just looking out for folks not wanting to get color all over themselves and their cameras :-) Everyone else will be working hard to get as colorful as possible!

I'm coming around noonish from L.A too, is there a contact person I can text/call once I get there so I can find everyone? Festival sounds like soo much fun! Has everyone decided to not bring good cameras? Or should I just get a disposable one?

My husband and I will meet the group at the festival. Not sure what's a good meeting spot... Or just look out for people with cameras.

Have any of you been to one of these before? Is there any advice you'd like to give?

    March 10, 2013

  • Jan E.

I'd love to go but am so afraid of messing up my camera with all the color dust. Anyone do this before and have suggestions?

    March 10, 2013

    • William R.

I'm going to use a OP/TECH rain sleeve to protect my camera. Here's a link: http://www.bhphotovid... (I got it on amazon though.) Use a filter on the front of your lens. Ont thing I would NOT do is change my lens there! BTW. I'm told the colors are made from flowers. So it's not "paint."

      March 10, 2013

    • William R.

Also, think about your car seat! Trash bags, towls, or a bead sheet is probably a good idea. I'm also going to take a small "can of air" like Dustoff to try and keep the camera filter clear.

We be going straight there, not staying all day. But really excited about going. Hopefully I'll spot the group

I addition to camera protection, everyone should also think about car (seat) protection. Also, think about inhaling all that paint dust. (What's that stuff made out of?) So a dust mask may be a good idea.

Another random item that will go on my list is a can of Dust Off (compressed "gas") for the UV filter and my glasses.

    January 26, 2013

  • Richard C.

I would use a protective cover such as the OPTECH Rainsleeve or the Kata Raincover along with a UV filter to protect my lens. I'd also wear old clothes and protective goggles just to be on the safe side...

Do I have to register/purchase tickets? I tried to go on the website for registration/tickets, but the link was broken. Thanks

I looked at the video from their website (link above) and I think the chance of getting your camera really messed up would be quite high. Where would you go that there wasn't color raining down on you? It's like color dust everywhere.
