Route 66 - a new route

Route 66 - a new route!

We will travel along Route 66 from Victorville to Barstow, stopping to see an old steel truss bridge, an ostrick farm, Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch, ending in Daggett.

This is an all day event – and we will start early to get as much in as possible. This is a "true" road trip, we will stop when ever and where ever ANYONE sees something of interest to photograph. Whether that is one stop for the day or 100 times in the day, everyone has an equal say in the exploration of this fascinating landscape. Be prepared to be patient and see some amazing sights of yesteryear. This will be great fun!

CARPOOLING INFORMATION: We will all be carpooling. Since this is a road trip, the only way to keep us all on track is to carpool and caravan. The first carpool location is at 7:00 (we will LEAVE at 7:00 sharp) at the old Levitz parking lot at the 55/91 exchange. From the 55, go west on the 91 (I know that sounds counter intuitive, but bear with me). Exit the 91 at Tustin, head north. Turn right into first parking lot (there is a light). Turn right again and go to the far end of the parking lot, to the abandoned Levitz showroom. Look for my red mini cooper.

The second carpool location is near the 91 and 15 at the North Main Corona Park N Ride. We will leave the parking lot at 7:30 SHARP. We will meet at the parking lot closest to the 91, located between E. Grand Blvd and the 91.

The third and last carpool location is near the 15 and 10 interchange. At 8:00 sharp at Ontario Mills. From the 15, exit 4th Street, which is the first exit after the 10. Turn right on 4th Street (west), turn left on Franklin Avenue into Ontario Mills. We will meet at the Edwards Theater parking lot, near Mills Circle. At each carpool location we will collect up as many people as are waiting. We will be leaving on time from each location. We may need to rearrange cars and people as necessary to take the fewest number of cars. I would appreciate it if people with cars that hold the largest number of folks would offer to drive, you will be compensated for gas/wear & tear. The drive with new people can be some of the best experiences you will have on the day!

Whether you are new to the group or a regular, I’ll guarantee that you will make friends on an event like this. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at this event. We will stop at a diner for lunch along the way. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen and a jacket. Please update your RVSP the Friday before so that I have a good sense on our numbers to assist with the carpooling organization.

Angela is the best organizer I've met so far. The trip was perfectly planned and executed. It had been expected to be a mess with this large of a group, however, it was not the case here. Nobody got lost, and it was incident free. I think another attribute to this success came from the group, people understood that there is a schedule to follow and no one slow other people down (ok, maybe me trying to squeeze in a few last shots) Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to see you all on the next excussion.

Would someone please give me a street address near the first carpool meet? Maybe of the Starbucks you guys are mentioning? If I don't GPS this carpool stop, I KNOW I will get lost :) I'm hopeless when it comes to getting around ...... I'm coming from Huntington Beach. Thanks.

The old Levitz is now Casa Furniture and the address is Casa Leaders Furniture
      1000 N Tustin Ave
      Anaheim, CA 92807

I think we should meet at Starbucks and get some Coffee 55/91

    1 · January 10, 2014

    • William R.

Yes but. Bring you camera. Because 70 people storming a Starbucks has got to get one hell of a look from the help!

Maybe I will sneak in early.(taking order now)LOL

This would have been my first excursion with this group. I finally have a camera! Feel free to give me pointers!....maybe I can make the next short excursion!

    January 10, 2014

  • William R.

I'm not familar with the 55/91 exchange area. Does anybody know the street or cross streets of the the abandoned Levitz showroom?

    January 10, 2014

    • Angela W.

Thanks Pam perfect instructions. William, as Pam mentioned, the first right turn after the freeway is a parking lot. There is a light and the street sign reads Pacificenter Dr, but you are not turning onto a street but into a parking lot

      1 · January 10, 2014

    • William R.

      Thanks

      January 10, 2014

  • Pam A.

It is the parking lot before the Starbucks. It is before the first light that turns into the Starbucks. There is no street it is right off the freeway you will see it fairly quickly off the freeway.

My husband has come down with the flu I'm sure no one wants so I am gg to cancel :(

    January 9, 2014

  • Kelly H.

Hi Angela - is there a place in Victorville I can meet you as I live 20 minutes north of the Edwards theater?

    January 8, 2014

    • Angela W.

For those north of Ontario Mills who would like to meet up with us, you can meet us at our first stop, a Steel Truss Bridge at approximately 9:15. From North I15, exit D Street, Hwy 18 (Exit No. 153A), turn left on OroGrande (this is Route 66, aka the National Trails Highway), go about 2.3 miles to the bridge.

      January 9, 2014

  • Andreas G

conflict came up, so I have to cancel unfortunately. Have fun.

    January 9, 2014

  • Connie S.

My husband and I are coming (meeting at the first carpool location) and will have room for 2 more, only thing is once we get to Dagget we will he heading to Vegas so any riders would need to find a way back... just putting it out here.

Also, I was thinking about making some type of signs for everyone's back window as a better way of keeping tabs on people. What do you think, Angela?

    January 8, 2014

  • Kat M.

I'm in Victorville and would like to meet the group. I could take any overflow from Victorville on. I've room for 3. Angela, where will your first stop be?

    January 6, 2014

    • Angela W.

Kat - please read through the description. By the time we get to Victorville folks will already be in cars. But thanks.

      January 6, 2014

    • Kat M.

Yes, I read through the description - I meant if a vehicle was too full. I was hoping to be able to connect up with the group in Victorville if you have an idea of time and location.

      January 8, 2014

  • Angela W.

Hi everyone, it's great that folks are working on their own carpooling, however, for this event to work, whichever vehicle you end up in must meet the group at one of the three "official" carpool locations listed in the event description.

Regarding losing the last vehicles in the caravan, walkie- talkies are great, but I can say I don't think we've ever lost a vehicle (at least not on purpose). This is the fourth time we've done this event, and so long as folks are paying attention at each stop, we shouldn't have any problems with keeping the cars together. I'll send out an email on Thursday, January 9 to remind folks about the event. Again, if you DO NOT plan to attend the event, please change your RSVP - it makes the planning and carpooling a little easier. Thanks.

Have you considered chartering a bus?

      January 7, 2014

  • Sarah M.

I so wanted to go. But life is getting in the way. Have fun!

    January 7, 2014

  • Pauline F.

I am thinking 80 people all trying to shoot the same thing maybe a tad too many. How will this work

    January 6, 2014

  • Ed

I will be going but 73 are wayyyyy too many to shoot together, Ill go on my own

    January 4, 2014

  • RJ C.

If I do not have to work. I'll pick it up in Ontario Mills at 8:00 AM

    January 4, 2014

  • Leticia

i hope i can find the first carpool location. thanks for setting this up, Angela

    January 1, 2014

  • Eric P.

I'll be coming from the OC and I'll take my Prius. If we won't carpool with anyone, then I'll drive (I love to drive). Then there will be 2 available spots in my car(3 if we can squeeze in). I'm going to bring my OMD E-M5 with my walkaround Zuiko[masked]mm f/4, as well as my Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 (hopefully it will have arrived by then).

    December 30, 2013

    • Elizabeth

      Where in OC?

      December 30, 2013

    • Eric P.

We will be at the first Carpool location at the old Levitz parking lot at the 55/91 exchange.

      December 30, 2013

  • Andy M.

From my previous experience, communication with a walkie-talkie is better than using cellphone on the road like this when we're driving. I have a 5 mile range pair that I can bring.

    December 18, 2013

    • Eric P.

Great idea! I'll bring my walkie talkie.

      December 30, 2013

  • Eric P.

Let's hope i won't forget the date. Exciting to join you guys.

    December 18, 2013

  • Pam

This will be my first excursion with this group. I finally have a camera! Feel free to give me pointers!

    December 17, 2013

  • Connie S.

    Hopefully the weather is great

    December 11, 2013

  • William R.

I'm looking forward to it. But I do have one question. How are people in the rear cars going to alert people in the front cars when they want to stop to photograph something? Is cell that reliable out there?

    Oops. That was two questions.
