Road Trip: Hike to abandoned homes, wander lavender fields & visit a farm zoo

A full day of exploring north San Diego County and the lovely community of Valley Center. The day will start with a short (approx. 1 mile) hike to a small group of abandoned homes/campers to photo the decay. There are children's rooms with drawings on the walls, kitchens with pots, pans and canned food, letters, a well, work station and SO much more.

From here we’ll head over to a nut farm, where we will have a picnic lunch, enjoy the farm zoo and fields and the expansive gift shop. Bring your lunch!

After lunch we’ll head over to the lavender fields to take photos of these beautiful flowers (there is a $5.00 admission fee to the lavender fields). This busy day of beauty and decay should be great fun. In addition to the admission fee to the lavender fields, there is a $5 fee being charged for this event to better help with the management of the RSVP’s. The charge is not refundable and all proceeds are being donated to the 501(c)(3) non-profit, Creating Partnerships for Progress (larger donations are certainly welcome!).

CARPOOLING: For folks who want to carpool, we'll meet at 7:00 at the Tustin Marketplace near 5 and 55. Exit Jamboree, north. On the Irvine side (east), near Lenscrafters. (Babies R Us is the big box store in this particular parking lot). Address: 13662A Jamboree Road, Irvine, CA

NONCARPOOLERS: We will meet at the Starbucks located at 1485 E Valley Parkway, Escondido between 8:00 – 8:30. This will be a good opportunity to get a coffee, use the facility and caravan to the first location.

TO BRING: Plenty of water for the hike, sunscreen, good walking shoes, hat, lunch and great attitude!

It was my first road trip with Angela, thanks! Sorry we couldn't make the abandoned houses, but the day was fun, and the scenes were amazing.

This was another great event.. I had a great time. I even took a nap at the lavender field. What a relaxing weekend.

What is an adventure without a bit of adventure? Angela planned quite an eclectic event, on the way to Hells Canyon, she kept us away from the guy with the shotgun, and when even she could NOT charm the rancher into giving us access on his property to the trailhead, we all decided to just go NUTS for the morning.

In the afternoon, we also managed to go Lavender and Alpaca, finishing up in the evening with a Lobster fest.

"And the Academy Award for the most dedicated Meetup Organizer" goes to Angela Wendel.

    Thank you Angela!

Had a great time...even though the ruins were a no go, it was fun hanging out at the nut farm for the afternoon. I would have loved to have gone to the lavender fields and the alpacas but I already had plans for the evening. Looking forward to future excellent outings!

Another great outing with many photo opportunities and the perfect ending. Not that eating your weekly amount in one sitting is that great, but boy was it good.

What a great day! My first time out with this group was a lot of fun. Thank you to Angela for putting together such a great adventure. It was nice to meet everyone and I hope to see some of you on the next trip.

Besides the great photo ops, this adventure was a fine lesson on going with the flow, of allowing surprises, even welcoming them. Not just that we ended up at the wondrous alpaca farm after being run off like unwashed riff raff from our first hike, but how often life's roll of the dice favors us. Barnet and I were zipping home at night after the amazing lobster pig-out. Curving left on a mountain road with cliff on the left and dropoff on the right, some idiot with a handicapped license plate decided to pass us on the left. In one forever-instant, we rounded the curve and spotted the oncoming headlights. A disastrous head-on was inevitable except that Barnet hit his brakes to let the idiot swerve back into our lane with no time to spare.

We silently recommended the flying idiot get some lavender tea.

Love the adventures Angela "plans" or "doesn't plan" for us! It always is a day of great memories!

I had a great time. It was a long, but very productive, fun day. I probably won't be eating tomorrow.... Thanks Angela for organizing this particular shoot. We know it was challenging in many ways.

I was about to head down Paradise Mt Lane and brave the shotgun on my MTB, when I fortuitously looked up and saw a red Mini zip by past followed by a whole caravan. I dropped my bike shoes and jammed to get on board. Although we had to forego the abandoned houses, it wasn't a very heartfelt loss. And its omission was soon forgotten after plenty of time at the Nut Farm, the Lavender Fields, and especially the Alpacas (http://creekpointfarms.com). It was great to see again some friends from Yosemite, and to meet new ones. As always, many thanks to Angela for organizing a wonderful trip!

I have an unexpected house guest. BUT on your hike, watch for snakes. I saw a large one when hiking in the San Bernadino area and @ Anza Borrego. It's very dry and there are more than usual.

    May 18, 2014

Yes. The event is happening east of Escondido, east of I -15. I'll continue to monitor, but at this time, none of the fires are near the event.

How much walking will this involve? I may just go until the nut farm and skip out on the lavender fields because I don't want to overdo it. The biggest draw for me are the abandoned homes. :)

    May 12, 2014

    • Angela W.

The hike is approximately one mile in each direction

Hi I wanted to know about carpooling...i wanted to land at oceanside airport. About 2 miles east on 76 off the 5. Could I get a ride from there? I can also land at Ramona and carlsbad if needed. Prefer not carlsbad since it usually has fog in the evenings.

      Thanks Pete :)

      April 22, 2014

Shoot me an email and we'll exchange cell phone numbers. We can leave the airport as late as 07:45, but then we have no margin and Angela will scoot from her Starbucks at 08:30.

I would like to carpool with someone. I will pay for gas.

    April 21, 2014

    • Angela W.

Hi Marie, if you join at either of the carpool locations you shouldn't have a problem finding a ride.

      April 21, 2014

  • Rita S.

Sadly I can't go (I'm working that day) ... but just an FYI. I've been to the Lavender fields before. They're lovely and great ... but the road to get to the entrance isn't payed. It is very very bumpy with lots of roads. If you have a low riding car, I definitely suggest going with some with a truck or off-road car.
