So Cal Photo Explorers! Message Board › Day in LA - Fundraiser Lunch and LA excitement!
On July 25, scheduled on the calendar is a fundraiser lunch in LA - this fundraiser is for a charity that I co-founded with my children to help communities in need in the developing world. This year we are going to Guatemala to build homes. Each home costs $3500 . . . think about that sum. For $3500 a family can go from a shelter made of corn stalks and plastic sheeting to a concrete block home. I invite all Explorers to come join me for this event.
Come buy lunch to help build a home and then make a day of it in LA. I know that it’s a long drive for a lot of folks to come all the way up LA for a meal – but LA is so wonderfully diverse, there is a lot to do. After lunch, you can:
Go 7 miles west to the Annenberg Space for Photography to view the spectacular BEAUTY CULTURE exhibit, which provides a seminal examination of photography’s role in capturing and defining notions of modern female beauty and how these images profoundly influence our lives in both celebratory and disturbing ways. Featuring works from over 100 world-renowned beauty, fashion and fine art photographers, BEAUT Y CULTURE encourages a social discussion about the allure and mystique of the pursuit of female beauty, as well as its cult-like glorification and the multi-billion dollar industries that surround it. Open from 11am - 6pm; LOCATION: 2000 Avenue of the Stars, #10, Los Angeles, CA 90067
Or, go 20 miles west to the Getty Museum. Enjoy the beautiful architecture of this magnificent center, take a daily Garden Tour, enjoy the many different exhibits and wander through the photography exhibit A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now that looks at three critical periods in the nation's history as witnessed by photographers before, during, and after the country's 1959 Revolution. And lastly, just take in the view of the LA basin and beyond. Open from 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., Admission to the Getty Center and to all exhibitions is FREE, no reservations required. Location - The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles.
Or 18 miles west to take in the Santa Monica Pier – an iconic place with its arcade, food and carnival atmosphere, the beautiful beach and beautiful people completely worth photographing.
Or 3 miles north to the Griffith Park Observatory, a fantastic building and surrounds with stunning views of the city and nearby HOLLYWOOD sign. Or go over to the LA Zoo for a day with the kids!
Or 4 miles south to famous Olvera Street and Chinatown, one of the oldest areas in California, which hosts LA first church, firehouse and theater, in addition to the Avila Adobe and other historic sites and residences. Pio Pico was the last Mexican governor of California (1845-46) and his house was the first hotel in the city. In its center lies the old plaza, the symbolic heart of Los Angeles. Olvera Street, and the nearby Chinatown, provides a wonderful assortment of places and people to photography.
So, you see, coming to LA for lunch can be so much more! Lunch is only $10 for a custom menu for this event. And half the cost of your lunch is donated to Creating Partnerships for Progress (www.creatingpartnerships.org) to help with the purchase and construction of homes in Antiqua, Guatemala. Come out to support a wonderful cause and enjoy yourself at the same time! Invite your friends and family and make a day of it!
