BELTANE (or Bealtaine) is a celebration of spring. It is also a way of connecting with the Earth Mother very directly—the idea being that the sexual connection of those present flows from and to Gaia Herself encouraging growth for good crops, large herds and strong and healthy children for the women of the tribe as well. The priest and priestess are believed to become or at least represent the God and Goddess in their love making. The Great Rite was part of this celebration in ancient times and from it many children were born. Since festival children's paternity was often in question, they were considered children of the Gods. While Jewish and Christian traditions are considerably different, they agree in the belief that we are all sons and daughters of God and that the divine is within each of us.
