Wow! that's a pretty broad question. Pokyamory includes both Polygamy (one man with multiple wives), and Polyandry (one woman with multiple husbands), as well as any other permutation you can think of (Line Marriage, Open Marriage, Polyfidelitous Marriage, etc.), at its outer extremity it even includes some swingers if they include love in their practices. It would probably take a book to explain all the different forms polyamory could take.
Hopefully, I'll meet people to have long term loving relationships with. Other than that, it is good to associate with like minded people. It is also good to be able to help newbies figure it all out.
I've been in an Open Marriage since 1974, but unfortunately, I haven't had any other active relationships for many years.
Yes, the only ones still at home are 21 and 34. We have always been open with our kids about our polyamorous relationship, and they think it is logical and normal, and the rest of the world is weird.
Ideally, I would be in a Line Marriage as described in Heinlein's 'The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress'. However, I think it unlikely that I will achieve that ideal, due to my current agreement of time commitments. Therefore, I will take whatever poly relationship(s) I can find that do not tamper with my commitments.
Polyamory was not a word when we got married, but we have had an Open Marriage from day one (it was in our vows).
I enjoy being a part of the group.
