We will hear from Dr. Manoj Kaplinghat (pronounced Man-oh-juh Kaw-pling-hot) of the UC Irvine Center for Cosmology, talk about "Demystifying Dark Matter." This talk is about the mysterious matter that scientists know must be there -- exerting gravitational force to hold galaxies together -- that we can't see.

The Orange County Chapter of Sigma Xi is composed of over 200 scientists and engineers. The chapter is updated at meetings on science topics by local science and engineering experts. These presentations are often on the cutting edge of science or sometimes they offer a fascinating historical retrospective of some branch of science. In the past, our usual audience of some 35-50 members and invited guests have listened to outstanding speakers from such noted universities as Caltech, UCLA, USC and UCI and such research institutions as JPL and Scripps on every science subject from astrophysics to zoology.
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, has had a distinguished history of service to science and society for over a century. Its primary publication, The American Scientist, is generally recognized as one of the nation's premier scientific journals for nonspecialists.
