Join us at The Science Cafe in Oceanside for a latte, dessert, and some science on the side.

This month, come to Barnes & Noble to learn from the experts how to incorporate green technology -- energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly tech -- into your home and business...its good for the planet and will save you some Do-Ray-Me.

Our leadoff discussion leader, Orlando Ferrer, is VP of Operations at a leading software developer in OC. Orlando managed a yearlong process at inFORM Decisions in RSM where employees participated in determining the choices available to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. This included conserving energy, reducing the use of paper, gasoline and plastics. Orlando is now a spokesperson for his company, sharing his newfound knowledge of climate change, conservation and the greening of corporate America including the IT Department.

Our second discussion leader, Chris Smith is a well-known Senior News Commentator on the ecological/green scene as it applies to the IT operations of companies. He has reported on IBM's Go Green Program in the pages of MC Press Online (www.mcpressonline.com) for the past year and is familiar with strategies that companies are following to green their IT functions and realize a variety of benefits.

Program Time (3-4 PM)....stick around afterwards for the continuing discussion next door at Macaroni Grill.

1. 5 minute introduction by Science Cafe host and Asst. Organizer, Dennis Fletcher

2. 20 minute discussion led by Orlando Ferrer on what you can do to make your home and company
more environmentally responsible and shrink your carbon footprint.

3. 20 minute discussion led by Chris Smith on taking your home computer or company's IT function
green and what benefits can accrue.

4. 15 minute open discussion -- please plan to share your own experiences at the individual, family, company and IT levels.

Attendees expressed a strong interest in what they could do within their organizations and within their own personal lives to reduce carbon footprints. The example of an organization going green shared by Orlando Ferrer of inFORM Decisions and computer publication editor Chris Smith's update on how IT departments are going green, were well received. An updated version of Ferrer's handout, titled The Green Manifesto at IFD, can be requested from the speaker at orlando@InformDecisions.com.

We are hoping to attract members of organizations in the private and public sectors who have had experience reducing the carbon footprint of their employers (or the company you may happen to own).....we hope you will come and share your experiences, as we'll attempt to videotape the discussion and put it here or on YouTube. Many organizations have not even started to go green or find ways to reduce harmful impact on the environment. It all starts with one person - one company - one organization.
