The von Kármán Lecture Series

The von Kármán Lecture Series has a new lecture every month on fascinating topics.

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is an imaging instrument that has been operating on NASA's Earth-orbiting Terra satellite since 1999. ASTER is a joint project between Japan, which provides the instrument, and NASA, which provided the platform and the launch. A joint operational team manages and commands the instrument, and a joint science team decides on scheduling priorities and conducts scientific research using ASTER data. The data are being used to answer questions about climate change, look for new mineral deposits, monitor volcanic eruptions, investigate urban heat island effects and numerous other applications. The ASTER project has released a global digital elevation data set that provides the best coverage ever achieved.

Hi all,

Come see a screening of "Randy Olson's New Movie: "Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy" at UCLA on the evening of Dec. 7th! Everyone will benefit and learn from each other. Dr. Paul Shin, director of SoCal Science Cafe, will be there as the Science Cafe representative sponsoring the book signing after the program.

In honor of the International climate change negotiations happening in Copenhagen, Denmark this week, UCLA is presenting a screening of "Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy" followed by a panel discussion and book signing.

Monday, December 07, 2009
7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
The UCLA James Bridges Theater
Melnitz Hall 1409

On December 7th, the day that world leaders gather in Copenhagen, Denmark to negotiate a new global climate pact, UCLA's Institute of the Environment, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the National Academy of Sciences' Science & Entertainment Exchange are hosting a film screening and panel discussion.

Beginning at 6:00pm there will be a book signing with Randy Olson, author of "Don't Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style", and James Hoggan, author of "Climate Cover-Up".

At 7:00pm UCLA will screen Randy Olson's film "Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy". For more information and to see the trailer, visit www.sizzlethemovie.com.

Following the film we will have an engaging panel discussion with Randy Olson, James Hoggan, cast members from the film, and Glen Macdonald, the Director of the Institute of the Environment and Professor of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Geography.

More details to follow, so keep checking for updates, but this will be a great opportunity to interface with Randy, scientists and the public!

December's dinner meeting features speakers from Exotic Electro Optics’.

Abstract: High optical quality IR lenses, windows and domes for various electro-optics (EO) and infrared (IR) optical systems are essential when operating in harsh environment conditions. These applications require precision optics fabrication for various specialty materials with low absorption and scattering loss, good index homogeneity, low transmitted wavefront error and high material strength. An overview of Exotic Electro Optics’ experience and manufacturing capabilities in producing high quality IR lenses, windows and domes will be presented. Applications of IR windows and domes will be discussed. In addition, a recent material evaluation study presented in SPIE on the state of the art Spinel material will be presented. Prior to the technical talks, Evan Lundstedt will provide a brief company overview.

visit: www.ossc.org for more details and registration.
