Presented by the Initiative for Collective Neuronal Dynamics and Epilepsy (ICNDE) How do thought, perception, and creativity emerge from the collective behavior of the astronomical number of neurons that make up the human brain? What role does collective neuronal activity play in neurological diseases? Collective behavior describes the phenomena that occur when large numbers of individual units such as molecules, cells, or organisms interact. Here the influence of the masses elicits behavior that otherwise might not occur in the individuals. Traffic jams and angry mobs are unfortunate but familiar examples of collective behavior in humans. In the brain, cells called neurons fire electrical spikes similar to a digital code. Individually their behavior is unreliable, but together neurons cooperate to form complex patterns of electrical activity, which we call brain clouds. We will discuss the science behind these and other organized patterns observed in nature.

On Tuesday, September 29th the Southern California Chapter of the Science and Technology Society (SCCAVS) is pleased to present an evening with Dr. Michael Hecht of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Il Fornaio’s Sorrento Room in Pasadena. His talk titled “My Summer on Mars (well Tucson actually)” will include a mixture of scientific results, a discussion of what it actually takes to run a mission on Mars, and a few mildly amusing anecdotes. The deadline to register for this event is September 23rd and the cost is $20 per person for non-members, $18 for AVS members, and $10 for students. This includes a buffet dinner at 7pm followed by the presentation at 8pm. Please arrive early as we will hold a “meet and greet” networking event prior to dinner at 6pm. For more information contact info@sccavs.org.

The September program for the Orange County Space Society will be given by OCSS member John Sisson. This will be an updated version of the program he first gave in March that was so popular everyone wanted him to come back and give it a second time. We would love to have a large turn out from So Cal Science Cafe members as well. John's program will focus on how Walt Disney helped to ignite the flame of imagination and to show how the idea of going into space, to the Moon, and even to Mars, were not things of a far off future, but something that could be accomplished in our lifetimes. It is visionaries such as Disney that we could use again today to do what he did 50 and 60 years ago. John will have video and lots of display materials that should be very entertaining and enlightening. It should be a great program to bring everyone in the family to. Hope to see you there.

Sunday, September 13, 2009 The San Diego Space Society holds their monthly general meeting from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Branch Library. http://sdspace.org/ Dr. David Schrunk of the San Diego chapter of the Moon Society will present a program on the "PLANET MOON PROJECT", which portrays a vision to transform the Moon into an inhabited sister planet of the Earth in the 21st century. Dr. Schrunk is lead author of “The Moon: Resources, Future Development and Settlement” (2007), which has been praised as “a handbook describing what must be done to return to the Moon, build permanent bases, and use them as a springboard for economic development”.

The Orange County Space Society will have a special meeting and program on Sunday, August 16 at 2:00 pm at the Irvine Heritage Park Library. Following up on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing we will first be showing a short film entitled "Apollo 11: First Steps" that I first produced 15 years ago for the 25th anniversary. Following the film, we will have a discussion amongst members and guests concerning their memories of Apollo and future hopes for the human space exploration program. I hope that members of the SoCal Science Cafe might decide to join us at the Orange County Space Society for this meeting and program. There has been very little happening with this Meetup group of late and OCSS has been one of the few groups attached to SCSC that is still doing programs for this audience. I would hope that SCSC members would seek out the opportunities which myself and other organizers have put together on their behalf. This is an excellent resource for those interested in science and space, yet no one here is using it. I would hate to see it simply dry up and disappear. For a map on how to get to the meeting, check out the OCSS web site at: http://www.ocspace.o rg then click on "Map to Meeting" Take care, Michelle Evans President, Orange County Space Society

Our annual picnic and Apollo celebration is being held on Saturday, July 18. The picnic starts at noon and runs until whenever. Anyone who would like to join us from the Science Cafe is also more than welcome to join us. We will be at our regular location of Brookhurst Park in Anaheim which is near the Brookhurst exit from the I-5. This is a unique park built in the 1960s on a space theme, so is the perfect setting for our annual get-together. Cost of the picnic is just $5 a person, but that covers hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks, and dessert, so it is a great deal. You're also more than welcome to bring any special dish. A map to the park can be seen and downloaded at our webbsite at: http://www.ocspace.o rg/maps.htm I hope that some SC members may decide to come join us. There has been very little activity from this group in a long time so maybe it's time to get out and get involved again. Michelle Evans President, Orange County Space Society

The Orange County Space Society (OCSS) is planning a truly fun event. On our regular meeting date of June 21, we will be presenting "AstroJeopardy. " The game starts at 2:00 pm and will be followed by our regular membership meeting at approximately 3:15 pm. This is a space- and science-oriented version of the popular game show that we have done previously to everyone' great delight. So come and join the fun and be a contestant or just watch it all unfold. Test your knowledge and learn new things. For more information on OCSS and a map to our meeting location in Irvine, please go to: http://www.ocspace.o rg Take care and have fun. Michelle Evans President, Orange County Space Society

We are hosting a two day public astronomy event at the Mission Viejo Library on April 3rd and 4th. It is part of the International Year of Astronomy 100 Hours activities. Details about the event can be found at: http://www.socalastr onomy.com/AstronomyM VLibrary.html I wish to invite members of the Science Cafe to attend. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the event. We need amateur astronomers with Ha solar telescopes and regular telescopes for the day time and night time star parties. And we also need volunteers to help with the children's activities, setup, tear down, organizating etc. If you are intersted in helping or have questions they can contact me by email at dstember@msn.com. Thank you, Richard Stember Scopes-4-Schools, Inc. a California non-profit organization
