Visiting Assistant Professor in Astrophysics at Pomona College

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Pomona College invites applications for a one year visiting assistant professor in the field of astrophysics. Appointment begins July 1, 2008. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or closely related field. Pomona College, the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, is a highly selective liberal arts college attracting a diverse and national student body. A strong commitment to quality undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting is therefore very desirable, and those with significant teaching experience are especially encouraged to apply. The teaching load is five courses per year, and responsibilities will include teaching introductory astronomy with laboratory, advanced topics in astrophysics, and some physics courses.

We are especially looking for an observational astrophysicist who can involve our students in research using our research-grade 1-meter telescope (with remote observing capabilities) at a dark mountain site near campus as well as two 14-inch telescopes on campus. The successful applicant will be comfortable teaching and supervising core physics majors, and will work well with the Physics and Astronomy department. Applicants should send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, a summary of research plans, and at least two letters of reference to Dr. Bryan Penprase, chair, Pomona College Department of Physics and Astronomy, 610 N College Ave, Claremont, CA 91711. Email applications will be accepted: please send materials to bpenprase at pomona dot edu.

See http://www.astronomy.... and http://www.physics.po... for more information about our programs and department. Applications received by February, 15, 2008 will receive complete consideration. Pomona College is an equal opportunity employer, and it especially invites applications from women and members of under-represented groups.
