Hey Nerds! Time to set aside the Game of Thrones again - you know it will be there once you're done with our next book club book (and probably the book after that.)
Our next book is Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett. This was recommended as a great book to give the group a good taste of this prolific fantasy fiction author. I know I said at the last book club that it was going to be The Colour of Magic, but I am informed this is a much better place to start. I am unlucky enough never to have read any of his books and am very much looking forward to this book.
Here is a bit from a Wikipedia entry on Pratchet's Fantasy world that this book is based in: Discworld is a comic fantasy book series written by the English writer Terry Pratchett, set on the fictional Discworld, a flat disc balanced on the backs of four elephants which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle, Great A'Tuin. The books frequently parody, or at least take inspiration from J. R. R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft and William Shakespeare, as well as mythology, folklore and fairy tales, often using them for satirical parallels with current cultural, political and scientific issues. The series is popular with more than 70 million copies sold in 37 languages. Since the first novel, The Colour of Magic (1983), 39 Discworld novels have been published as of September 2011.
Here is Amazon's description and a link: Here there be dragons...and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all...). http://www.amazon.com/Guards-Terry-Pratchett/dp/0061020648
I think we could all use a good laugh after our last graphic novel murder mystery. Hope to see all of you there!
