It is that time of the year again! "Free Comic Book Day" is a single day, the first Saturday in May each year, when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. This year is extra special since it lands on May the Fourth (be with you), which coincides with the yearly greeting day for all the Star Wars fans out there.
SPECIAL SIDE NOTE: Comics & Beer Discounts!
Here is a special announcement posted on the comic book store Facebook page:
FOLKS! We're partnering up with Societe Brewing Co. for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Show them any one of the comics you've picked up from us on May 4th and get $1.00 off your drink! Hot books and cold drinks...what else could you ask for? Check out their page!!!
The brewery is located in the same business park as Southern California Comics and we could possibly stop by there on the way to post shopping lunch time (see information below).
When should I arrive at the store? What will we do when we get there? Here is the itinerary I have in mind for the day. We will meet at the comic book store in Kearny Mesa at 10AM when the store officially opens. Hopefully this will allow enough time for everyone to wake up, enjoy a cup of coffee and hit the road. I would love to meet all of the fellow comic book readers in this meetup group. I would be interested in hearing about your favorite characters and which series you are currently reading. The store does close at 5PM, but we probably will not be staying for the entire day. There will also be a face painting booth for those who have kids they would like to bring to the event. Word on the street says there will be an exclusive Walking Dead free issue that will be printed just for this year's Free Comic Book Day.
Will there be food at the event?
Yes! Two gourmet food trucks have signed on to furnish food for the event. Artisan Pizza and Mangia Mangia Mobile will both be set up to sell food to attendees.
Is there plans for an "after party" to help wind down from the event? Upon the conclusion of our venture through the store we can stop by Lolita's Restaurant (Kearny Mesa) for a late lunch (or early dinner) for further commiserating and discussion of our comic book purchases. This place has plenty of room for large groups and the menu is very affordable (ex. $2.75 for a bean and cheese burrito). Here is a Google map link for the store location: http://goo.gl/maps/N6ggF. The restaurant is one mile west of the comic book store. (Driving Directions: http://goo.gl/maps/LWXGs)
Why the location in Kearny Mesa and not some other comic book store? The reason why I have selected Southern California Comics (www.socalcomics.com) for the venue is the huge inventory they have in stock in addition to the specialty booths they have set up in the parking lot every year for Free Comic Book Day. I will post the details of the specialty booths here as soon as they list the details on their website. The booths usually display collectible items like toys and magazines from years past. Think of it like going to a swap meet or flea market just for comic nerds, so bring your cash with you if there is any intention of buying that Captain Picard figurine you always wanted to include in your collection. Not only will there be the free comics set out by the publishers, but Southern California Comics might be adding to the stock of discounted comic issues that might be of interest to you. Plus they always have their famous dollar issue room for you to rummage through for hours on end.
How do I even find my way to the store? The comic book shop resides in an industrial park and I have pinned the Google Maps link here (http://goo.gl/maps/FkR9R) so that you can see exactly where the store is located. It's within a block or two west of the 163 freeway at the Clairemont Mesa Boulevard exit, which is centrally located in the county for easy accessibility by everyone.
How much money will this event cost me? The answer to this question is entirely up to you! There will be a selection of free comic books for you to choose from with no catch and no minimum purchase. However, if you do plan on buying regularly priced merchandise then you can buy as much or as little as you want. Have a little bit of cash with you just in case! If you buy merchandise directly from the store itself you can use your credit card or debit card, but they have a store policy of $10 minimum to pay with your card. The booths in the parking lot will be cash only transactions.
Special discounts and sale items.
Discounts will include half off all regularly priced dollar books, dollar DVDs, card sets, and toys, and a selection of $5.00 trades.
