Shark Swimming

Leopard sharks are about 4-6 feet long and are not human-aggressive. They'll be in the shallows of La Jolla Shores for their annual breeding season. This is a very common ocean activity and I went last year with a guide - it was awesome! We'll snorkel around and see not only leopard sharks, but fish, sting rays, and lots of other sea life.

Bring fins, snorkel, mask, and a spring suit or full wetsuit - all can be rented at nearby shops (for example, La Jolla Kayak has a fins, snorkel, mask, and suit rental package for $25). Wear plenty of sunscreen! We'll meet at The Map® near the restrooms, next to the playground.

*You must be able to swim! I'm not trained in rescue, but there are lifeguards on duty. I highly recommend attending the 3Rs class on June 15 to familiarize yourself with the area.

Work prevails for now, but if anything changes, I'm in. Things change on a dime in my work, I'll know my schedule better into next week. Will keep you informed.

It was great to meet you all! Had fun. Saw some sharks. Didn't die. 9 outta 10. Would meetup again. (Points deducted for foggy mask and uncharacteristically poor photography skills. Both user error).

This was a really fun time. Thank you Susie for being the event host. I noticed a lot of people had their own gear. If anybody else is, I'm certainly down for doing this a bunch more this summer followed by surfing.

Hey guys. I went snorkeling with my brother and sister in law today. I saw a couple sting rays and a bunch of leopard sharks and guitar fish. Also saw a few other random fish. It was really fun. I would have gone tomorrow with the rest of you but they are leaving tomorrow morning and wanted to do it.

I am not going to be able to make this trip - but some friends are planning another day trip on the weekend after the fourth. Sorry - just moved here - been in a hotel for over three weeks and I can move in to my new place on sat! Have to make my dogs and my living situation a priority.

Just to be sure I understand. We are meeting at the Kellogg Park bathrooms on the corner of La Vereda (boardwalk) and Vallecitos. Is that right?

    June 25, 2013

  • Michael W.

Hi Susie! I understand about the map on the ground at the bathrooms. Thanks. Everybody who does not understand. The bathrooms are at Kellogg park, there are only two at each end. I believe the map Susie is talking about is at the end by the playground (see my earlier post). As for what we do with the map, I'm guessing, if we want to go together, we all need to be on time or early. See you all at 9:00am shark!!! Ooops.... sharp!! :)

    June 25, 2013

  • Nang

The map shows Gaslamp. I'm not sure which Bar I should be asking to use their restroom. The playground is gonna be a challenge.

    June 23, 2013

    • Nang

is there literally a map at the bathrooms? cuz all this time, i thought you were referring to the "map" hyperlink.

      June 25, 2013

      Yes, there's literally a map :)

So, if we catch a shark, can we eat it?

    June 25, 2013

I was thinking of doing some volunteering too - beach clean up? Or contacting the companies who do shark swimming - it would be great to find away to give back or reduce our foot print while we visit.

    1 · June 24, 2013

    • Alicia

I am going to the next one - just wanted to know if anyone was interested - I decided this year that it was about giving back - so I try to find something in all my adventures! :). I love for others to join in too!

      June 25, 2013

    • Susie

You don't need to contact a group to clean up the beach! But you will have to bring your own supplies. ;)

  • Michael W.

Hi Susie! Are you still planning to change the date of this event?

    June 22, 2013

      No, sorry.

      June 25, 2013

  • Adnan

My brother can't find his extra set of snorkel gear. Does anyone have an extra set i can borrow?

    June 22, 2013

    • Susie

You can rent some near the shores, it's not very expensive for a day.

      June 25, 2013

  • Susie

We'll be in and out of the water all morning, and some people will be coming just to hang out. You can go in the water any time, I chose 9 because morning surf conditions tend to be better for swimming. The only rule is ALWAYS SWIM WITH A BUDDY! This rule in not negotiable. The area where the sharks congregate isn't near a lifeguard tower, and if you run into trouble without someone keeping an eye on you, you're gonna have a bad time.

    1 · June 25, 2013

  • Mike(y) C

This will actually be my first meet up. Swimming with sharks somehow seems appropriate...
