Nerds with a side of Salsa

If you feel you can’t dance but are willing to give it a shot, this is the event for you.

Most of us know that nerds are not very coordinated to dance. But then again that is exactly the reason you should join other nerds to learn how. It’s not about how good you are at dancing. This event is all about nerdy people getting to together to learn something new without the fear of being judged. What is could be stopping you from coming out to learn the basic step and enjoying some music and great company?

**UPDATE**

There is no cover before 10pm. $10 cover any time after that.

***UPDATE***

Thanks Mary (Swanson or Samsonite?)

"Ah, clothes! For the men, I'd recommend a nice pair of
jeans with a collared shirt and comfortable (but still nice-ish) shoes (black Vans/converse are a popular choice)."

"Ladies, nice jeans paired with a pretty top is ideal.
You're going to be lifting your arms a lot, so I'd avoid the strapless tops/bras. For your footsies, anything closed toed is fine. Use heels wisely (know your pain tolerance!) ;). If you want to wear a flowy skirt/dress, remember that when you spin, your skirt spins with you!"

The next Salsa Event is posted (Sept 27th) please RSVP soon, so I can talk to the Salsa organizers about getting discounts for larger groups, and reserving an area for just us.

Thanks to everyone who showed up! And a very SPECIAL THANK YOU to Miss Tatiana for being such a great host in my absence to get this kicked off the right way and get the best spot in the house for the A.L.N. I am so proud of everyone who was nervous about getting on the dance floor or learning a new dance. The next event will be posted VERY soon. And it will be a recurring event.

I know that some people were still debating whether to go to Salsa Dancing, but I want you to know that you will be around like minded people. People who are trying for their first time or with people that know how to dance salsa and know exactly what you are going through since they, at one point, had a first day themselves. We are all nerds here and understand social anxiety when trying something new.

This is going way out of my comfort zone! No amount of study or remedial drills will gift me with a sense of rhythm and brain-foot coordination. I will only attempt this if totally surrounded by a double battlement of equally challenged nerds to hide behind. I make Sheldon Cooper look like Fred Astaire.

    August 28, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

Well roughly 60 nerds do as your battlement of equally challenged nerds? We will all be behind you and I certainly want one dance with you.

Ok but you might want steel toe shoes. Let's put all of the other nerds in front of me so I can hide while attempting this display of lack of coordination. At least 60 strong I know I won't be the only one sweating bullets and overcoming social failures from my teen years. So glad I found you guys!

As most of the people who have seen me at a few meetups now would disagree with what I am about to say it's still very true...
I have a hard time approaching people I don't know or in an enviroment am not use to yet. So for me to have my nerds there will help me out just as much as it will anyone else in this group.

I am working to find a new venue as the La Jolla Marriott will be understaffed that night and has chosen to close down the Dancing for that evening. "I wanted to inform you that management at La Jolla Marriott decided to cancel Salsa this coming weekend due to the Labor Day Holiday. Too many of their staff unable to work." (E-mail I received)

My staff and I are hard at work finding a new place to accommodate our needs. We are doing everything we can to make it the same night and time and the same experience you would have had at the Marriott.

"If you feel you can’t dance but are willing to give it a shot, this is the event for you." Yep. That about covers it. Mildly terrified, but I'm in.

    August 14, 2013

    • Mike(y) C

Not terrified in the "I'll look like an idiot" sense. More in the sense of "I apologize in advance for crushed toes and bruises from flailing limbs." It's hard not to feel self conscious when you're out of your comfort zone, but this is about as non-threatening and as supportive a group as it gets, which is why I immediately wanted to go.

"Dancing is amazing. It is the only time where you can ask a lady you've never met to dance with you, spend 3 minutes putting your hands almost anywhere and at the end she thanks you for it." Rough translation of a quote I got out of a dance book about a year ago.

Hey, I was wrong:P It just started being free before 8:00pm again! See ya there

    August 7, 2013

  • Angel G.

I am all for this event and super excited, just want to make a few comments/suggestions. Aug 30th is labor day weekend and the weekend of the San Diego Salsa/Bachata Festival. The Marriot in La Jolla is free on Wednesdays and has a class. The least intimidating and friendliest place to dance salsa in SD is Queen Bee's in North Park on Sundays at 7:30 $10. Dance studios sometimes have open dance parties with a lesson that is a very relaxed environment. Tango del Rey in Pacific Beach is having one on Aug 16th $10. I'd love to help organize, but I really recommend a different date. BTW nowhere will be free on a Friday.

    5 · August 5, 2013

    • joules

I'm down for queen bee on sunday...added bonus, I live right there, so we could have pre ( or post) dance beverages/snacks at my pad. Let me know! Maybe next weekend?

At the la jolla marriott they offer salsa dancing too on Fridays and they also have lessons. It's $10 to get in but I think before a certain time its free, the bar is called Characters, it's a fun place, been many times!

    August 6, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

So have I. But it's been a long time since I've been there. I remember them have a class and a door fee or $10 when the Dance floor opened up.

      August 6, 2013

    • Angel G.

The Marriot is great, but Friday before 8:00pm stopped being free when they reopened:( It is still an awesome place on Friday's, but maybe not the first place I would recommend if you've never been dancing before. Time to Dance Studio in North Park has a first Friday social (September 6th) with a lesson, light snacks and drinks, we can bring our own snacks and drinks. It is $5 and limited to 60 people. The participation at the studio social is not too high, so it would be the 20+ of us nerds and probably less than 15+ people not from this group.

      1 · August 6, 2013

We've done Salsa dancing before. Look back through the past meetups for the location. Once you find a location, I'll announce the meetup. Thanks!
