Crystal Cove Paddle (the Cottages area) plus Rolling Practice

We will meet at at the Coast Guard Beach in Newport Harbor between 7:00 and 7:30 (depending on how fast you get ready) for a launch at 8:00 for a paddle to Crystal Cove (the Cottages area) and back. Please make sure to get there early enough to be on the water at 8:00. This is a 5 to 6 mile round trip ocean paddle. When we arrive back in the Harbor we will stop at China Cove and spend an hour or so practicing rolling skills and what ever comes to mind. We try to start our return to the Coast Guard Beach by 11:00 so that the group can be at "Fireside" (the Bluff's Shopping Center) for lunch by 12:00 to discuss the days events. There are no kayak rentals and you must have a kayak that will keep up with a moderately paced paddle (normally 12 feet plus in length). We help each other during the paddle and practice session but none of us are there in the role of instructor or guide and all who attend are all responsible for their own safety.

The wind and the tide made for some huge swells that were fun to ride. And it was a hot day so my weekly wet exit wasn't even all that bad!

We did not get blown out to sea after all but it did feel like we were at some point. Some part of the paddle we did encounter high wind which made it interesting. I am glad we did go out. It was sunny and beautiful colors. Nice group of paddlers. Look forward to do a longer paddle with everyone.

George, is the wind going to blow us out in to the ocean and we will never come back again?

Ok good to know! I'm not shy from paddling hard and very much conditioned for it but I like to enjoy a trip every once in a while so again, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll try to find a different group in my category of kayak type.

      Hi Sam,

My other group from Redondo Beach might be a bit of a drive for you, but it tends to be at an easier pace... Fred

It would be difficult to keep up but not impossible. You would have to be in good paddling shape and be ready to paddle hard.

I'm interested but not sure I can keep up with 16+ ft sit-in kayaks. I have a 12' sit-on-top Tarpon from Wilderness Systems. You'll probably leave me in the dust :)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
