Abalone Point and Short Rolling Practice

We will meet at at the Coast Guard Beach in Newport Harbor between 7:00 and 7:30 (depending on how fast you get ready) for a launch at 8:00 for a paddle to Abalone Point and back. Please make sure to get there early enough to be on the water at 8:00. This is a 10 to 12 mile round trip ocean paddle. When we arrive back in the Harbor we will stop at China Cove and spend fifteen minutes or so practicing rolling skills and what ever comes to mind. We try to start our return to the Coast Guard Beach by 11:00 so that the group can be at "Fireside" (the Bluff's Shopping Center) for lunch by 12:00 to discuss the days events. There are no kayak rentals and you must have a kayak that will keep up with a moderately paced paddle (normally 14 feet plus in length and a sea kayak or faster SOT). We help each other during the paddle and practice session but none of us are there in the role of instructor or guide and all who attend are all responsible for their own safety.

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I have been traveling. I see that you and Coral both would like to attend but you both have shorter sit on top kayaks. This paddle is one of our longer paddles we very often do shorter paddles that may be better for a first time out with the group. We will all be in much faster sea kayaks and it might be a real challenge for you to keep pace for this distance. Paddling back by yourself in the open ocean is never really a good idea. We always encourage new people to join the group but I am unsure that this is the right paddle. Perhaps you and Coral would like to form a sub-group and paddle in the harbor and still join us for lunch afterward.

I appreciate your response! Not sure that I could keep that pace up! If I give it a try, and not able, I can always turn around and go back by myself, right?

I would like to attend. I've never done 10-12 miles. How many hours do you expect to be kayaking. Just wondering if I can handle it.

We've been going about 3 mph lately, so about 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

These longer trips are fine. Just bring a little more gas for the motor.

You think this is troubling, watch for CC to Dana Point.

I'm seeing I troubling trend here George. 1st it was B.A.R and back, then Crystal Cove and back, now Abalone Point back. Geez, soon it will Laguna and back. :-)
