Theme frameworks: Why use one and what are the options? (August Meetup)

We'll have Pizza tonight courtesy of Soflyy.

Here's our Lineup of Presenters so far (Subject to change):

Geoffrey Walcha - Genesis
Adam Silver- Headway
Mario Noble - Divi

Developers Still Wanted:

Do you use a WP theme framework (Genesis, WooThemes, Headway, etc.) for your projects? Would you like to present your favorite theme framework for 10-15 minutes to our group? We need your help :)

It's a great way to give back to the community and get some speaking experience.

===

Please join us for our monthly SoCal WP meetup on the west side at Cross Campus' new location.

This month's winner based on community topic voting* is: WP Theme Frameworks.  Thus, we'll have a quick overview of how Theme Frameworks "work" plus some demos and examples sites using them.

So if you're a WP developer who has a favorite theme framework they'd like to show-off with a 10 to 15 demo/overview, just contact Noel or Natalie with some details about yourself and the theme framework you'd like to use.

We'll also have food and drinks, so please join us in Santa Monica for a fun and fact filled evening!

Our food sponsor this month is Soflyy. They just launched KnowMyRankings - a Google rank tracking service and plugin.

Learn more at http://www.knowmyrankings.com, or download the WordPress plugin at http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-rank-tracker

Also if you'd like to volunteer for setup and tear down, please let us know as well. We'll need about 3-4 people to help out.

As it's Santa Monica, please pay close attention to the parking signs on the street. One preferred paid parking place is the SM Library [masked]th St) about a 0.25 miles away on foot, where you're guaranteed not to get a ticket.

Informative presentations on WP frameworks. Nicely done. The best takeaway for me was that not all responsive themes necessarily provide customization for every widget. What's the best way to discover this up front when evaluating themes?

Hi there Lara, I usually at least run them through the Google Chrome "Inspect Element" that let's you emulate different browsers. While it isn't perfect, it does give you a good idea what the themes mobility optimizations look like. Here is a URL with documentation showing how to use Google Chrome's mobile emulation: https://developer.chro...

Great topic -- as usual! :-) The presenters were very knowledgable and the Q & A was really useful!
Thanks to Natalie & Noel, and the sponsors [even tho' we were too late for pizza! ;-) ] No worries! :-)

Hi Everyone, we're super excited to get our SoCalWP meetup going tonight. Please note we're having pizza tonight - generously sponsored by Soflyy, so dinner's on us! Also if anyone can get there 30-40 minutes early to help with setup, we'd appreciate it. And as usual, we'd like to get help with clean up afterwards. We appreciate all our volunteers :)

Just found a TON of info on Divi's blog. Been awhile since I searched. Nick and his team provided answers to my questions. They highlight and detail some real Divi users. Big question: Anyone willing to mentor? I read a case study and a mentor helped someone. In LA, ppl charge for everything. I don't, which is why both my photos are widely published and money is tight. I've helped many in my life. But has anyone found someone with better web skills willing to help back? Does ANYONE MENTOR and help others? Other than giving at the meetings, the idea of mentorship seems so alien in LA. I've given a lot of my time and energy to ppl. Anyone out there willing to give to others? Or is it all about money? I don't wanna sound gripey, but you don't know my background. It's easy for me to give but so hard to find a mentor. Just asking. Have a nice day.

Wish started at 7 so we could have more Q&A. Interested in Divi. Want to know more about portfolio options. My question about blog posts went way over my head. I'm not an idiot, but I feel diminished at mtgs. I need to see REAL examples of those sites beyond the minimal examples the companies post. LA/SM full of CREATIVES. How about some sites and info for and by artists, photographers? I wanted to get more under the hood. We don't have options to try the software. I have spent ALOT of money on themes and then realized features I want I can't get without hiring someone. They are marketed for non-programmers. So the fault is not mine.

ONLY answer: hire someone? I'm not a newbie. If you are an intermediate WP person, not a full-time, hard core developer and too advanced for newbie meetup, what then? Can we have a meetup wherein questions and dialogue are encouraged more deeply? Start at 7 like you said you would. Just sad. Again. Or market it for developers. I should know by now.

    Hey,
Can anyone recommend the best e-commerce themes on WordPress? I'm trying to create a website for an online resale boutique and I need a professional, yet affordable and manageable WordPress theme? I'd prefer something simple and not too modern. I'm new to WordPress so any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks!

No one ever replies to the message boards, why kill the conversation when its ongoin?

      August 19

    • Natalie M.

It's just that everyone who RSVP'd for the meetup gets an email notification of every message. It seems unfair and unexpected that RSPVing for a meetup about theme frameworks means you'd be getting messages about unrelated topics. Additionally, the conversation on a meetup has an expiration date - once the meetup has passed, these conversations are archived and tough to get back to. More general conversations on the message boards or in our Facebook group can go on indefinitely and involve only those who are interested.

I just joined the group and look forward to exploring how to possibly use WordPress themes with FileMaker Pro database backend.

    • noel s.

hi Ralf, we're actually doing a plugin project for a client that imports in a CSV file from FM Pro and shows it as a price grid. So it's possible to do something like that but unless FM Pro has some sort of ability to publish an XML or JSON feed in real time that's probably more challenging.

Hi Noel. Thanks for your reply. As it happens FM includes the ability to access XML data sources so there may be some hope here.

Hi everyone, we're very excited to have our Theme Frameworks topic for SoCalWP Meetup next week! We're currently looking for a Genesis developer to give a quick demo/overview. So far we have two gracious volunteers to show off Headway and Divi (Elegant Themes) but would love to get someone with a strong background in Studio Press' Genesis framework to show it off. Please email us if you're that person :) or let that person know about our Meetup! Thank you,
    SoCalWP Team

Hi there Natalie and Noel, can you clarify which Frameworks you will be covering and in what depth you will be delving into each. Thanks so much.

    August 6

    • Natalie M.

We'll be happy to announce those as soon as volunteer speakers have told us which frameworks they want to cover!

  • Anna Marie P.

Sorry to miss this one, have a schedule conflict that night. hopefully some of it will be posted. Thanks for doing that with the earlier meet-ups.

Hi everyone, so it looks like "Theme frameworks: Why use one and what are the options?" topic is winning. So in the interest of time we're going to make this the chosen topic.

Any volunteers to present their favorite theme framework for 10-15 minutes and share the stage with a few other WordPress developers?

    August 6

  • Natalie M.

Hey everybody! Please keep conversations in meetups on topic for that meetup. More general discussions can be moved to our message board (http://www.meetup.com/SoCalWP/messages/boards/) or our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/socalwp). Thank you!

Hi Debra! You'll certainly learn some stuff about WordPress here and meet some smart people who will be able to answer your questions. If you're just getting started with WordPress, you might also want to check out the Los Angeles WordPress 101 Meetup - it's geared just for beginners and only tackles beginner topics. http://www.meetup.com...
