What: A moderately quick, 20 mile romp around eastern Fort Lauderdale including Riverwalk, Las Olas, Bayview, Victoria Park, Rio Vista, and Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Where: We meet at Holiday Park. From I-95, take the Sunrise Blvd exit and head 2.2 miles east to the park entrance. It will be on your right directly across from Big Wheel Bicycles. Turn right into the park entrance and park in the first parking lot on the left (by the ball fields).
When: Try to get there by 6:30pm, to be on your bike and ready to ride by 6:45PM. We want to be finished by 9PM. If you are running late, are lost or want to meet up on the route, call Stuart: nine 5 four, eight 0 two, two 433.
Who: This is a friendly ride, but it is not a ride for folks who like to go slow, who don't know how to ride their bikes (though most technical stuff and all the hard stuff is optional) or who are uncomfortable riding in an urban environment (as it is an urban ride). If you have done a Boca or Hollywood Urban Ride and felt comfortable with the pace of the middle of the pack, you will be fine. There are several extended sprints of riding 15+ mph and several short breaks. There are riders of various speeds in this group. Everyone wants to get a good workout, but we try not to leave anyone behind, try not to lose any newbies and try to fix all technical problems as a group. We want to have an exciting, fast and safe ride and still get back to the park by 9:00. Everyone rides at their own risk.
Bike: Fat tires or skinny. Do what you wanna. YOU MUST HAVE, AT LEAST, A BLINKY WHITE HEADLIGHT AND A BLINKY RED TAIL LIGHT TO AVOID BREAKING THE LAW. Helmet and lots of hydration also a smart idea. Bring a spare tube and snack and extra stuff for your friends.
Route: The route direction is generally counterclockwise, but may reverse if the wind direction is strong from the northeast. We head south from the park through Victoria Park to Las Olas and the river front and cruise along the river to RiverWalk. There are some options for jumps, stairs and bike skills in this area and we have a meetup at the fountain. Then over the Andrews Ave bridge and east along the river front with a mulch ride option into Rio Vista, Cliff Lake and Harbordale. Ducks! Behind the shopping center on 17th Street to the Art Institute and then across the big bridge to the beach. After a short bathroom break and chat, we blast up A1A (more options for stairs and ramps!)to the secret beach boardwalk for a snack break and chat and maybe some swimming. Then on to Commercial Blvd, across the intracoastal to Bayview and south along Middle River Drive and back to Sunrise. Then west on Sunrise a couple of blocks across the Middle River bridge and south on 20th to 9th and then west to Holiday Park. Total Distance is around 20 miles.
With the exception of the ride down the A1A bike lane, the bridges, Bayview Drive bike lane, and a couple of blocks on Sunrise Blvd, this ride will be completely on residential side streets in nice neighborhoods and is usually stress free - traffic wise.
Great night, nice ride, Mark, Thanks for the water bottle tonight. Matt, sorry about the broken window. http://ridewithgps.com/trips/86...![]()
