Social Anxiety Meetup of Austin (SAMOA) is made up of everyday people from all walks of life who just happen to be challenged to some degree with social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder is a persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which you are exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. You often fear that you will act in a way (or show anxiety symptoms) that will be embarrassing and humiliating. For those of us with social anxiety disorder, the following are some typical situations that can be very challenging:
If this is how you feel when you're around others or in a performance situation, then you've come to the right place. You're not alone and you don't need to suffer in silence. We are all walking in the very same shoes that you have on right now.
SAMOA is here to provide support and encouragement for each other, share our challenges in life, and learn from one another as we walk together on the road to recovery. No matter what you think you know or have been told about social anxiety disorder, it is possible to recover from this disorder and live life on your terms. But, you must have an open, understanding mind and the courage to face and overcome the very fears that make you feel trapped. While the group is comprised primarily of individuals who are either professionally or self-diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, we welcome any person who can offer insight and support in working through and overcoming this disorder.
SAMOA offers you the opportunity to meet others with social anxiety disorder and hopefully make new, lasting friendships. This is done through support groups, educational workshops, and social events and opportunities that are usually free of charge to members of this Meetup. Thank you for taking the time to read this as we at SAMOA hope you decide to take that next step by joining our group.
