Day Trip to Victoria BC & Afternoon Tea @ the Empress Hotel

This was so much fun a few years ago, that we're doing it again - the ultimate Girls' Day! We will arrange rides and meetup spots so we can catch the 9:00am ferry to Victoria. We will pre-purchase our vehicle ticket(s) to assure boarding on that sailing. This means we will each pay a couple of extra dollars for the reservation fees and share the vehicle fee (I am not willing to be bumped to a later sailing due to summer weekend traffic).

Feel free to post carpool offers & requests on this page and we will get everyone sorted, but we will not make specific plans until closer to the event date, when everyone knows for sure if they are coming. I will send out a group email when it is time to coordinate specific rides and pickup locations, so until then please continue posting general requests and offers but hold off on posting actual pickups, so we can make sure to accommodate everyone when the time comes. Please note that we follow the general Meetup guidelines when it comes to sharing carpooling costs, including ferry fees, parking, and cash from each passenger for the driver for gas, effort, and wear & tear.

Please advise me directly of all dietary restrictions so I can communicate them to the restaurant with the reservation.

In any case, we will definitely all meet up together at the ferry terminal prior to boarding, to fit into as few vehicles as possible for the ride over and back. We will probably take the 9:00am ferry over, and return on the 7:00pm ferry (arriving in Tsawwassen about 8:30pm) Based on the specific interests of those who replied to my questions on other activities in addition to Afternoon Tea, we will visit the Butchart Gardens and possibly the Butterfly Gardens (located close to each other), and/or wander around the fun and charming Inner Harbour area near the Empress Hotel.

STEEPED IN TRADITION SINCE 1908

A time honoured tradition for over a century, the world renowned tea lobby of The Fairmont Empress has served England’s most beloved ritual and Victoria's grandest tradition of Afternoon Tea to famed royalty, celebrities and dignitaries alike. Award-winning Executive Pastry Chef D'Oyen Christie and Team serve hand-made signature Empress scones, delectable pastries and tea sweets prepared in house daily, reflecting locally sourced ingredients to ensure an authentically memorable experience. From the original blend of The Empress Tea created specifically for The Fairmont Empress, served in dainty William Edwards, (formerly Booth and Royal Doulton), china and sterling silver service to the enchanting ambiance of the live piano, Afternoon Tea is an absolute 'must do' for all who visit Victoria.

DIETARY NEEDS

TEA SELECTIONS

Empress Blend

Exclusive to The Fairmont Empress, this delightful blend boasts a bright coppery colour and takes milk exceedingly well. The Assam component lends a rich malty character, while the Kenyan black tea provides subtle floral hints. Kenyan green tea infuses this blend and lively aroma, complemented by fruity, sprightly and airy piquant flavors of Dimbula from Sri Lanka. Small amount of Keemun draws the elements together with burgundy depth and light oaky notes.

Margaret’s Hope Darjeeling

“Margaret’s” is harvested during the ‘second flush’ (late May to late June), when the fragrance and taste are most complex. This tea offers delicate ending astringent cup, with the distinctive character of Muscat grapes and hints of current.

Fairmont Earl Grey

A blend of distinctive flavour and aroma derived from the oil of orange bergamot.

Borengajuli Assam

A delicious malty tea from the Borengajuli estate of Assam, India. Has a velvety feel on the palate and a natural sweetness.

Jasmine Butterfly Green Tea

The most famous scented tea in China and most commonly known to be a therapeutic tea.

Cascade Peppermint Tea

A naturally caffeine free tea made from blending peppermint and spearmint leaves.

Kea Lani Orange Pineapple

A bold and bright orange pineapple tea made from all natural herbs and dry fruit, this blend offers a refreshing, slightly tart profile to those that say “no” to caffeine.

Willow Stream Spa Blend

A superb blend inspired by our in-house Spa is produced in Zimbabwe. Decaffeinated, excellent depth and satisfying body with delicious malty notes and reminisce of caramel.

Please note additional optional "event fee"/donation of a loonie per person, to help cover the meetup web site costs (a 1-month term as organizer costs me $19, and while I am willing to foot the bill, I would like to offset some of the cost). You can pay this in advance via PayPal if you would like. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Marie, I will be rescheduling the event for later this summer :)

      1 · June 1, 2013

  • Jenny

Hi Everyone - with Danielle and Jan, and also a few others unable to attend, I'll also cancel & hope we can try again soon. I'm just stepping out the door for a work retreat until late Saturday evening and won't have time to make alternate ride details. Looks like a great event!!! Thanks Danielle for arranging this.

    May 31, 2013

  • Jan

Sorry girls I'm going to bow out of this one. Ravi, I have emailed Jenny to see if she still wants to go and maybe catch a ride. I will leave it up to her to contact you. Have a good time if you go and thanks for offering to take other riders.

    May 31, 2013

  • Shila_Bhimji

Pardon the delayed response, however, due to arising circumstances I will have to cancel out on this. I look forward to the next tea time.

    May 30, 2013

    • Jan

Shila, you should go in and change your RSVP to a No, right now you are still showing as attending.

      May 30, 2013

  • Jan

Okay, so I have room for 3 people only. I have not heard from Shila yet. Ravi it might be advisable for you to make your own reservations as I am not going to be anywhere near NW for a pick up.

Jenny and Lindsay if both of you need a ride let's meet at the Starbucks at 67th and Oak by 7:45AM. I think that will give us enough time to get to the ferry.

Danielle, my car is full so anyone else going needs to find another ride.

Are we still meeting at the terminal. I have booked my reservation on the boat so I want to check in as soon as I get there. Or should we try and connect on the ferry?

    May 30, 2013

    • Jenny

Hi Jan - thanks so much for the offer. I look forward to meeting you at the Starbucks at 67th and Oak at 7:45AM on Sunday. Looking forward to it!

I am very excited to attend this event! It will be my first outing with this group & first time having High Tea @ the Empress. I live in the West End.. is anyone driving that way and room for a passenger?

Hi Jenny, Jan has room in her car :)

Hi Danielle - thanks! That's fabulous. I'll connect with Jan.

      May 30, 2013

  • Lindsay

I need a ride from anywhere accessible by bus or skytrain; coming from Oak and Broadway thanks

    April 22, 2013

    • Danielle B.

Hi there, just reminding you that there was a solid commitment to share costs when I was organizing the carpooling, and that was the reason I had originally planned it that way. However, it is saving me time and energy now that people have planned their own. But it would be a shame for you to miss the event for that reason!

      May 10, 2013

    • Danielle B.

Hi Lindsay, Jan has room in her car!

      May 29, 2013

  • Marie

Hi! I went ahead and RSVP'd a spot. i will be in Victoria already and am hoping to just meet you ladies at the Empress for tea at the set time (still not sure of the time?). SO looking forward to meeting you all!

    May 29, 2013

  • Jan

Shila, can you confirm if you are still planning to attend? I'm good either way.

    May 29, 2013

  • Jan

At this time I'm still planning to attend and have made reservations on the ferry for my vehicle. If anyone needs a ride please email me as I would hope to share some of the costs. Danielle I expect that you might be away right now in Cali as we haven't heard from you. Hope all is well. Are you still going to be able to attend?

    May 28, 2013

    • Danielle B.

Ok if someone else is stuck, I will direct them to you! I'm off to visit my puppy at the vet's shortly - test results come back tomorrow. It sure is a hard few weeks for me right now... Thanks for taking the carpoolers :)

Not a problem. Keep me posted as to what you decide to do.

Hi Danielle, did you have a time in mind for us to meet up at the Ferry Terminal? Boarding for those who have made vehicle res is a min of 30 minutes prior to loading, so I'm guessing well before 8:30? I've reserved a spot for my truck and can take 3 people if anyone gets to the terminal and needs a ride over. email me at [masked] for connecting.

Thanks Danielle for the carpool offer.
I'm definitely coming to Victoria now that I have a ride.
Please contact me re pickup time & location and payments.
Sorry about the earlier confusion due to my email/internet problems.

    May 13, 2013

  • Danielle B.

I bought a car today, and already contacted the three people who will be riding in it with me (first-come, first-served and based on my location). Others can use this comment board and/or private messages to coordinate rides & payments. Drivers: don't forget to book a ferry reservation ahead of time!

    May 10, 2013

  • Danielle B.

I had stated repeatedly on this page amd via email, that I would arrange carpooling based on geographic proximity and that I would make sure everyone pre-paid for their fair share of ferry fees, etc. However, I see that most plans have been made already, so I've changed my mind and I will only collect prepayment from the people traveling in my car (which I'll be purchasing this week, so I'll contact people needing rides privately). I don't feel comfortable jumping in to the middle of plans already made, as I stated before. I hope it works out for all of you, and well see you at the ferry terminal! You will also be responsible for making your own ferry reservations now. I'll arrange rides for those who are still waiting for rides.

    1 · May 8, 2013

  • Hello!ThailandTV_Shaw116

Cost for the sharing the ride should be Gas, Parking and Ferry, am I right? I haven't done this before, mostly it was business related so I did cover the exps. I would like to have a very good understanding before I agree to share the ride, just to avoid any misscommunication. If so, I will fill up the tank from the US, it should last us for the whole trip in Victoria.

    May 6, 2013

    • Hello!ThailandTV_Shaw116

the $200 last time I went to Victoria was for a round trip Ferry fee.

      May 8, 2013

    • Hello!ThailandTV_Shaw116

I will double check with the Ferry again I guess and I haven't been to Victoria for along time now, but I know that from the last experience me and my husband agreeing that we won't be going to Victoria with our car unless we have to or we have more people in our car.

      May 8, 2013

  • Jan

I will have a vehicle to take people. If you don't need a ride from Burnaby / East Van area to the ferry I am happy to provide rides to 3 people (4 if we absolutely need to squeeze that many in) onto the ferry and on the island. Let me know as I will be taking my vehicle regardless.

    May 7, 2013

  • Marie

Hi! I just joined this group - and funnily enough i'm already going to be in Victoria that weekend! If you do the high tea at the Empress i would love to attend. Is it acceptable that I just meet everyone there? Please advise - thanks! Marie

Just to confirm I am coming from North Burnaby if anyone needs a ride.

    May 4, 2013

  • Jan

Love to attend this and I can provide transport for up to 4 people.

    May 2, 2013

  • Hello!ThailandTV_Shaw116

I would be interested to attend if we can sorted the car pool, and/if all sharing costs. Day trip is fun, did try the walk-on things but I did miss my car, it tooks too much waiting time last time for the bus etc. Did visit the Butchart Gardens and absolutely love it, would definitely be interested in the Butterfly Gardens as I have not been there. Sounds like a fun day :)

It sounds like you have lots of fun events planned for June. Sorry I will be away :-( I'm sorry too Danielle, about your stepmother. Hugs. xx

I'd love to come along but I won't know for sure if I can make it until much sooner to the date.
I think it's only fair to the drivers that the added cost of the car going on the ferry and gas are divided between everyone in the car.

    1 · April 20, 2013

    • Danielle B.

Hi Kathy, not to worry - I've organized many trips with carpooling, and we follow the general Meetup practices of dividing the costs fairly. Most Meetups recommend that carpoolers reimburse drivers @ $5 per person, per hour of driving. It's a bit early to start that kind of detailed planning anyway, since (as you mentioned) our actual attendance won't be certain until much closer to the date.

      1 · April 21, 2013

  • Marie B.

Hi there, I'm new to the group and haven't met any of you ladies yet but I would love to do this! I dont drive so I was wondering if I would be able to go in somebodys car if there is any space, and I will chip in for gas:)

    April 20, 2013

  • Danielle B.

Please continue leaving requests and offers for carpooling in this comment section - thanks! We will compare and make specific plans closer to the event date :)

    April 19, 2013

  • Shila_Bhimji

There is interest for car pool, are there any volunteers? I would hate to miss out. I did do a translink search and it is a 2 hour one way bus ride for me so even if getting a ride to the half way point, I can do the rest.

    April 19, 2013

  • Lindsay

Would like to carpool...Danielle is it ok if I don't join for the tea and meet up with you guys after?

    April 18, 2013

    • Danielle B.

Sure, that's fine - just make sure that you get back to us in time to catch your ride back to the ferry! We will have prepaid reservations so we won't be able to wait and take the next boat.

      April 19, 2013

  • Tammy

Sounds like fun, but I in France at that time! Hopefully next time!

    April 18, 2013

I would like to car pool as well. Will pitch in for gas. I'm coming in from Port Moody, but can meet up somewhere. Thanks!!

    April 18, 2013

I am willing to pitch in for gas if there is a car pool arranged.

    April 17, 2013

I am putting myself as a yes for now as I really really want to do this. The issue for me is getting to the station and back and I need a ride. I will sort that out and ensure to give proper timing.

Tentative. Will come only if I can get a ride to & from Tsawwasen Terminal from Vancouver downtown or anyone of the Canada Line stations. A ride would be appreciated as it is a very long journey by bus otherwise.

    April 17, 2013

  • Melanie R

Would be great if anyone could offer a ride please

    April 17, 2013

I will need to squish into a car once we hit the ferry dock - can meet up anywhere along the skytrain route and meal restriction is gluten free.
