Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and Severn River in Annapolis

  • Aug 9, 2014 · 12:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We'll sail a J-105 sailboat in the Chesapeake Bay, the Severn River, and Spa Creek which borders downtown Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy.  The boat is 35 feet long and can comfortably accommodate 7.  No sailing experience is necessary, just the willingness occasionally to help out and have fun.  You should plan on arriving at the marina by 12:30, and we will leave the slip by around 1:00.  Before we begin our sail, I will explain basic sailing techniques and terminology for those who have never sailed before.  Please understand, however, that this event is not intended to be a sailing lesson.  It is an opportunity to have fun and meet new people while also learning the rudiments of sailing.  We'll sail as long as we are enjoying ourselves, but will return to the marina in any event no later than 5:30.  Sailing is contingent upon the weather, of course, and I will send emails occasionally to update you on the forecast and what to expect.  Generally speaking, we sail in light to moderate winds.  If the winds are too strong (steadily in excess of 30 knots), or if there is a serious threat of heavy rain, I will postpone the event.

What You'll Need

Everyone will need rubber-soled shoes.  Unless the shoes are designed for sailing, they cannot have black soles because they will leave black marks on the boat.  No flip flops.  Sunscreen and water are highly recommended.  Feel free to bring food and drink, including alcoholic beverages.  But please do not feel obliged to bring anything other than what you will want on the boat.  Red wine must be in a spill-proof container because it will stain the cockpit.  I know this from experience.  Alcohol consumption also must be in moderation on a boat.  Safety is the first priority.  You should dress appropriate for the weather.  If we have a windless day, plan B will be to motor around and anchor in a scenic creek and eat and drink and possibly swim.

It is imperative that everyone on the boat be considerate of others on the boat and that everyone follow directions for the enjoyment and safety of all aboard.  Also, please keep your RSVP up to date.  Because there are only 7 spots on the boat, no shows are intolerably inconsiderate and unacceptable.  Please do not sign up unless you are certain you want to and are available to sail.  Attendance, RSVP, and no-show histories are available to organizers, and I will remove RSVPs for anyone with a clear pattern of non-attendance.  If your plans change, please change your RSVP as soon as possible, and in any event no later than the day before a sail, to permit someone else to join us.  Last minute, necessary cancellations are inevitable.  If, on the day of a sail, some unanticipated exigency arises, please call me to inform me.  Anyone signed up to attend who fails to show without a call will be prohibited from signing up to sail in the future.

How To Get To The Marina

For those who prefer directions, here is the best route from Route 50:

• Exit 22 (Route 665)

• Route 665 becomes Forest Drive.  Continue straight

• Left onto Hilltop Lane

• Hilltop Lane becomes Tyler Avenue

• Left onto Bay Ridge Avenue

• Bear right onto Chesapeake Avenue

• Right onto Second Street

After 2 blocks, you'll reach Eastern Avenue.  Marina on your right.  You can park in the marina or on the street.

For reference, from Silver Spring without traffic it takes me about 45 minutes to get to the marina.

Guest Policy

Unfortunately, due to the limited number of people who can participate in this event, I cannot accommodate guests.

Previous No-Shows (Who May Not Sign Up):  Nick Case; Kyle Clifton

New Fee Policy

Experience has taught that some like to sail often and others like to sail once in a while.  I do not mean to discourage frequent sailors.  On the contrary, sailing enthusiasts are always welcome.  But in fairness, those who sail frequently should contribute something.  Therefore, henceforth, everyone can sail once each calendar year gratis.  After that, there will be a $20 fee per sail.

Contact Information

I will provide my cell number before the sail to those signed up.  In the meantime, feel free to email me with any questions.

A little late evening spasticity caused me accidentally to indicate that this sail is for Saturday Aug 16. It is NOT. The sail is next Saturday, AUG 9. Please make note and sorry for the confusion.
