Hike in Breakhart and (after party at Fat Cactus Mexicali Cantina)

  • Apr 13, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Because of the bad weather today and the fact that it's SNOWING at Monadnock, tomorrow's hike is changed to Breakhart. This is a much easier hike, so if you were looking for something ultra challenging, this is not your spot! However, for those who still wanted to get out and get some fresh air, meet new people and have fun, please join me!

Breakhart is just 30 minutes north of Boston, and is a really fun place to go for an easy hike. Let's get out and enjoy Spring!!

Camera

Hat

Gloves/Mittens

Small first aid kit (bandaids, ointment, etc)

Hi everyone, due to the current weather conditions at Monadnock right now, it is going to make hiking tomorrow pretty dangerous. As mentioned, the trails are pretty slippery and there is snow at the top. I am not THAT experienced in winter hiking and I don't have the proper equipment. Therefor, I am going to reschedule this hike for a month out so we can go when the weather is nicer! For those who still want to hike, I am more than willing to host a hike in the local area. I know the Ridge Trail in Breakhart pretty well (Breakhart is in Wakefield/Saugus) and there is a good view of Boston. We could go out for lunch after the hike. We could meet at 1pm, hike for 2 hours and then do lunch after at the Fat Cactus restaurant on Route 1. Please let me know if you would like to do this hike tomorrow. Email me at [masked] or email me here on the site

I will reschedule the Monadnock hike for one month out. Please update your RSVP!

How long would it take to get from Newtonville to Breakhart? I'm considering coming into the Boston area tomorrow for a ballet class at Boston Ballet in Newtonville from 10:30 AM - 12:00 noon.

Beth - hope you are feeling better! Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Hi so I'm not coming or hosting this event, but I wanted to make sure everyone realizes the conditions of hiking the mountain in April is much like hiking in winter. There is 6" of snow in the higher elevations, freezing temperatures and winds. Doug has recommended snow shoes and/or at the very least Microspikes
(REI sells them) http://www.rei.com/product/774966/kahtoola-microspikes-traction-systemDress for winter in layers, Just want everyone to be safe.

Please Please be prepared. I dont want to hear that anyone got hurt or slipped and fell or was too cold, Dress warm like its winter up ther and be prepared for the wind! Please be safe and have fun.

Please Please be prepared. Please, bring water and food as this is a 3+ hour moderate hike. Also, a special thanks to Doug for poining this out!

    April 12, 2013

    • Beth

Thanks Biagio. I am not prepared for winter hiking, so this particular hike will be rescheduled and I will be hosting a local hike in the area tomorrow instead to avoid dangerous snowy conditions!

    Just a FYI:

Mountain Weather and Conditions April 10th 2013: The trails are very slick, packed and icy as of early April. Anyone hiking Mount Monadnock should be prepared for mid-winter conditions including ice traction. There is about 6" of snow in the high elevations (April 10th, 2013) with deeper spots of a foot or more. The trails in the high elevations are snow covered, slick and icy. Ice traction is needed in spots. In the low elevations the trails are wet and muddy. It is much more windy and colder on top of Mount Monadnock than the lowlands. The summit of Mount Monadnock averages 10 degrees lower than the base. Rain in southern New England can be heavy snow or ice high on the mountain. Hikers need to be dressed and prepared for winter conditions. Hikers should bring ice traction, be prepared for snow and wear no cotton clothing which doesn't quickly dry up and can make one hypothermic. Hikers should wear wool or synthetics, and dress in layers.
