It's that time of year again! Let's meet for an evening of classical music on the Esplanade on Wednesday nights, all summer long! People bring their blankets or chairs, food, wine, and families to sit on the lawn on summer evenings to listen to classics and occasionally new works. The Landmarks Orchestra is generally good, occasionally excellent, and the venue is, well, FREE.

The season starts out with a program devoted to their annual "green" concert, celebrating our city, state, and national parks, and honoring the men and women who protect and preserve them. Come out and enjoy the music under the open sky!

(For a list of this summer's concerts, click => here.)

I schedule these events for 6:30pm, so we have a chance to meet and socialize before the concert starts--I have a giant 12'x24' blue tarp I will lay out, and will have my meetup button on.  (I have to get there by 6, or there is no space available for the tarp, so if you want to come earlier, that's fine too.)  Seating space will be first-come-first sit, as it were, and latecomers may have to find their own nearby spot. Be forewarned: The orchestra gets started right at 7pm, so don't be late!

The program for this evening's concert will include:

    Some highlights

On a hot, humid night, the BLO performances were a breath of cool air.

Wearing no tie, and with his white shirt hanging out over his trousers, perhaps for freedom of movement, BLO concertmaster Gregory Vitale was an engagingly informal sight as the soloist, and his rustic tone, wiry but not thin, was ideal for the piece. Some of the delicacy of the composer’s orchestration got lost in the outdoor acoustic, but Vitale’s playing was silvery enough to let one imagine those were skylarks overhead and not seagulls.

    For B's 6th,
"Conductor Christopher Wilkins gave the symphony a lush, unhurried interpretation that reveled in detail.

Is lush, unhurried interpretation code for slow?(lol)

All, I just heard on the radio that there will be enhanced security at the concerts this season; in particular: NO PARKING ON STORROW DRIVE, no backpacks, no glass containers, or alcohol, and everyone will have to go through a security check to approach the oval. More details here: http://www.landmarksorchestra.org/security.html

So it looks like our usual picnic-style events may be ruined. Thank you, the Tsarnaev brothers. Sorry, folks. :(

Lark in rehearsal, Lark in concert(Lark!!!!), B's 6th, Ray Brown(my favorite DJ) was the MC, Kitty and Michael Dukaksis were several rows ahead of us, delightful conversations about music and a certain English author!!! Special thanks to Will and Paul for helping the Ottoman Kirk up and off the oval. Cheers!!

Another night of lovely music with Vaughan Williams's "A Lark Ascending" as the consensus stand-out. A very friendly, laid-back group to be among while listening to the music.

They have taken down the tent, but we are on the big blue tarp just to the left of the soundboard in the middle of the oval.

My backpack and I spent much of Sunday and Monday at the Out of the Box Festival on the Common - great music and no searches or checkpoints. Security presence was generally low-key. Don't remember seeing any large coolers but wasn't particularly looking. Seems ludicrous that "enchanced security" is necessary on the Esplanade but not the Common - where the Commonwealth Shakespeare production is also running through the end of the month. BTW- the Out of the Box festival runs through this coming weekend and includes performances by the Boston Lyric Opera.

Agreed; they're being ridiculous, and I think it's just silly, and promoting fear-mongering. But the esplanade has arguably "easier to enforce choke-points;" to do the same on the common, they'd have to fence off the entire park.

Will........ most likely I won't attend, catch the group another Wednesday. It's not the 'added security' DRAMA issues-- because it IS drama, but the heat of the moment .... pun intended as it is 92 on my back deck. I'm not going anywhere but my back yard pool. ENJOY
