Finally, an easy way to help!

News on the oil spill has been scattered, confusing, incomplete. You probably know there is a volunteer list you can join, but they aren?t calling volunteers to the area yet. What they need most is volunteers with HAZWOPER training, which can be expensive if your job doesn?t provide it.

I?ve really been trying hard to think of a way our Meetup groups can help. But with so many wonderful conservation groups in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi, who to help? I've picked a few personally (links below) but for a group activity, I?m not set up to accept financial contributions for 3rd parties, so INSTEAD, let?s have an easy, breezy TEXT-IN! smile I just learned that National Wildlife Federation has a designated Gulf of Mexico wildlife relief fund, enabled with mobile giving. That means you can text "Wildlife" to 20222, and NWF claims 97% of your $10 contribution will go specifically to gulf wildlife recovery. Our Text-In for Haiti went pretty well, so let's gather again, raise our phones over a nice pint, and text some funds down south for the birds, turtles, reef life and dolphins!!

Even if you've already given, you can still come down to give even more via text, or to join our informational exchange. Truly hope to see you at this special event smile

Additional info, optional read:

We could debate which conservation group is better to contribute to, more hands on etc, but let?s keep it off this Meetup site and discuss in person. NWF is the only one with a TEXT-IN right now, so that?s easy for a group activity which is why I picked it. If you prefer not to donate to NWF, you can still use this Meetup event for the informational exchange. For example, what local groups down south are you passionate about? Do you have inside news about what?s really washed up so far? Just trying to learn what?s going on? I?m going to AL in a couple of months? anybody else visiting the area soon? If you are interested in joining the volunteer database, but overwhelmed by how detailed that process is, I can help. I?ll bring my laptop and show you how you can get connected to the relief efforts. It?s taken me weeks to figure out how to help, so now I want to share with those who are interested.

As an organizer with two large groups, I feel responsible to help. I can help in these 3 ways.

1) Provide this text-in Meetup to support National Wildlife Fund.

2) If you have ideas for future oil spill benefit Meetups, tell me your idea and we?ll try to arrange them.

3) Feel free to use my message boards to exchange helpful information on oil spill clean up efforts

Or if you're an organizer on another group and want to join us, I'm happy to do a joint Meetup.
