BP’s oil spill hit parts of Louisiana today. Over 10 wildlife refuges in AL, FL, MS and LA are in the spill’s path. Note: you must have Hazwoper (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) training to participate in most oil spill volunteer efforts. Many commercial websites offer Hazwoper training, but sometimes the training can be found for free. Many coastal non-profits are taking names of volunteers and available boats, but not yet directly recruiting. You can donate money through numerous organizations, but it’s not yet clear where the greatest need is. By next week it should become very clear where help is needed most. As more details emerge, I’ll post Meetups where we can contribute money or supplies to what will be a very massive cleanup effort.
