RE Policy Discussion with a SW Focus and Lightning Talks

Our next meetup ought to be a good one. As we did last time, we'll have food and drink for all. Then we'll have a Policy Discussion and finally some group member presented Lightning Talks! Please read on for more details about both.

7:00-7:20 - Show up, start eating and socializing

7:20-8:00 - Policy presentation and discussion

8:00-8:30 - Lightning Talks

8:30-9:00 - Additional socializing time

Policy Presentation and Discussion

We'll start off with a presentation and discussion about RE related policy with a SW focus.

What does that really mean? Well, I haven't done all of the research/prep yet so I can't say completely. But I think we'll discuss things such as: Federal Policy X says that all residential PV installs must be monitored by some system. How does such a mandate create a captive market for us to build software for? How does this new market differ from the traditional monitoring customer? Etc. Anyone who already understands a lot about this topic and wants to help me prepare this presentation should leave me a comment below.

Lightning Talks

Then, I'd like to have some of our fine group members share some of their interests and work in the form of a lightning talk. There are all kinds of formats for lightning talks... but let's keep it simple. 5 slides in 5 minutes. No forced slide advances or anything like that. I'm hoping there will be 5+ volunteers. If I don't have enough by early next week... watch out, I may start drafting you!

I'd like people to give a short overview of, well... pretty much anything that is SW and RE related. It can be work that you're doing now, work you've done in the past, and idea you have that you'd like to explore in the future, a new technology you just heard about and think others should hear too, etc.

Lightning Talk Rules

1.) if your chosen topic isn't inherently SW and RE related, just cap it with 1 slide about how it could be related to the other realm (ex: here is what I've done with SW based data analysis in the past, none of it is RE related... but the last slide talks about how it could be applied to RE related data, even though I've not done that yet)

2.) respect the audience... I know this is vague but I don't want pitches for condo time-shares or hard core propaganda about one company or another. I doubt I have to say this... but just want to make sure we're all on the same page. The caveats are that if it's a condo employing RE technologies that might be fine, or if you want to talk about an exciting new company which is in the SW/RE space... it could indeed still be appropriate. Use your best judgement and we'll trust you.

More Lightning Talk Details

This idea came from our group member, Sam, after we went around the table in our last meeting and got a small taste of all the exciting work that everyone was doing. He suggested that I take it one step further and let those who want to share more, do so.

If you'd like to play along and share something with us, please leave a comment below saying you'd like to present and a brief description of what you'll present.

The day before the event I'll reach out to those who are presenting to collect the presentations. I want them all on one laptop so we don't waste time with laptop/projector swaps. Ugh, those always suck.

Finally, I'll upload a quick presentation template for you in the More->Files area very shortly. I'll even be a good guy and get you a template in both PowerPoint and Keynote formats. NO excuses to not spend 1 hour putting something together!

Wish more folks had been able to attend but it was otherwise a great conversation.

I don't think I'll have time to put a presentation together but I'll be happy to talk a bit about Big Data and how it might be relevant to RE.
