I have been programming for 13 years.
What got you interested in software? I started learning to program part by dumb luck but, part because I have always been naturally curious about learning how things work. In 1997, I had recently graduated with a degree in visual design. I found that most websites were ugly and most programmers didn’t like doing design work. So I decided to try to teach myself so I could help create better looking websites on the internet. When I started, I knew that some web developers were able to teach themselves design skills for designing web pages. However, I never actually heard of any designers that taught themselves to program. I was determined to learn. Almost immediately, I realized that programming was what I enjoyed and wanted to do for my career and I have never looked back. These days, the thing I enjoy the most is the sense of pride that goes with designing and building things that I can watch people use. Really that has kept me enthusiastic about the work.
I would say redesigning and re-engineering all the intranet software while working at the Air Force. The team was very small so I was able to use a number of different skillsets including like project management, technical design, software architecture, programming, graphic design, server administration, retro-fitting old applications and developing completely new pieces of software. I found that the variety always kept the job from ever feeling tedious.
My name is Randy. I was wondering if the group is still active or or if it was abandoned and dying a slow death? If not, I would like to join!
