What do we mean by Oneness? This world is diverse and full of uniqueness - there is individuality everywhere. But beneath the outer differences, which are superficial in nature, there is a quiet, enduring unity. We bleed the same, when injured. People of all nations have the same chemical constituents to their tears, and it is a universal phenomenon to cry when we are hurting or sad. Which community of people does not dance at times of celebration, and laugh at times of joy? And our essential aspirations join us together, like one tapestry of humanity - the wish for peace, safety, and the fulfillment of dreams to extend ourselves, in all ways possible. How different are we then? Is there not more that joins, than separates us?

If we could all appreciate our sameness, whilst also valuing our diversity, this planet would be a very different place. It's not just about tolerating differences, but cherishing them, as a stepping stone to greater acceptance and mutual regard.

To explore this theme of Oneness more deeply, and to learn ways to live it, come and join our conversations, musical moments, poetic renditions and meditations on Mon 9th Dec 2013.

Hi all. Truly humbled to be in such wonderful, inspiring company. I have uploaded my poem about "Oneness" into the file area of our Forum and as I said last night...

    "The words encapsulated
    To savour them again
    Capturing the moment
    Though not the same refrain"

The enlightening evening was an eye opener. Oneness does not need to be created, it is already there. It just has to be seen.

As I am exploring oneness I am aware that the internet has become the symbolic expression of our desire for connectedness. Without Meetup, for example, we probably wouldn't have met. Our desire for boundariless information flow and unified connectivity is symbolised by the internet. What magical causality is at work here? What do you think?

I would describe the internet as a tool to engage with oneness... but it requires sense of oneness within people to operate it properly. Otherwise it has the potential to fragment us

Julie, the internet is certainly a tool that many of us are using to connect with each other, and bridge distances. It has magnificent potential, already having brought deep knowledge to our finger tips. People are using it, to create a magic of sorts! Your thought, Nige, reminds me of the difference between actions, and the intentions behind those actions. Just as a tiger can kill with it's claws and teeth, but uses the same parts of it's body to lift it's cubs from danger. Its similar for knives in the hands of a thief, as compared to a surgeon. Nurturing good intentions, tends to lead to good outcomes…however you wish to define goodness ! We certainly do not need any more fragmentation in this tiny village we can Planet Earth.

I really liked your comments Nige, they brought to mind something I read that Deepak Chopra said "Mind and matter are essentially the same. The field experienced subjectively is the mind, objectively. it is the world of material objects...human beings are not self-contained, independant entities, but are, infact points in the unified field, a field of energy of pure consciousness, that permeats the universe. They are inseperably interconnected with the patterns of intelligence in the whole cosmos...There are no well-defined edges to our bodies. We are not seperate....Our body is part of the universal body, our minds an aspect of the universal mind"

Einstein commented:"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the universe, a part limited in time and space". It seems that we are all one with each other and the universe on many levels.

Hope I can get to this, I'm down in the Cotswolds in the day so it depends on how soon can get back :)

We are all social creatures and as such human interaction is essential to our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being

We all know of stories such as that of Robinson Crusoe, where living alone, devoid of human companionship, takes it toll on the individual. Tom Hanks' character in 'Cast Away' humanised a Wilson volleyball, simply to have 'someone' to talk to

Yet when we are surrounded by the very beings that we need so much we often fight, bicker, and complain. We are so blinded by our own individuality that we fail to see the inescapable oneness that illuminates our very existence. May your senses be forever open to the oneness that pervades us all

UBUNTU - an african value system which promotes the idea; how can i eat when my brother is can I enjoy warmth if my brother is can I be happy if my brother is sad?

Time is full of contradictions - there are greetings and farewells...every pain converts into joy, every joy into pain. Flowers bloom, but must then dwindle and die. Just as night follows day. There is no eternal peace, or rest, in this world of form. It is in knowing the formless essence, that we may rise above these polarities, and experience the hidden oneness.
