Music Jam and Backyard Potluck!

Hello Fellow Music Circle Members,

The next music jam circle will be Saturday, July 26th, at 6:30 p.m. It's finally summer, and I'm looking forward to enjoying some tunes, a potluck, and your good company at an outside music jam in the backyard.

Please prepare a couple of songs to share that you would like to play in a group, and bring 8 copies so that we can see what you are leading. Also, it's helpful if you upload the songs to the meetup website under the 'More' then 'Files' tabs. If you do not have a song prepared, or did not bring copies, you can pick a song from our songbooks compiled from prior gatherings. If you have song you would like to perform for the group, we’d love to hear it. If you’d rather not lead, that’s okay too, just enjoy the songs others bring.

The Circle will meet at my house in inner SE Portland. I will send the address to those who have RSVP'd yes a day a two prior to the event.

I’ll provide a potluck item or two and a bottle of red wine. Please bring a snack or a beverage to share. There will be a $3.00 donation to the kitty to defray Meetup costs.

Each Circle is different, but they go something like this:

The Circle runs from 6:30 to around 10:30 p.m. We start with a handful of people, and everyone grabs a chair, after having some refreshments and snacks.

We go around the circle and take turns deciding which song to play next. It’s ok to pass, and let the next person pick. The person who picks the song generally leads it. Most songs are group endeavors, but there’s generally one solo song a night, and can be more. If someone is a songwriter, they might have an original to share.

Some song circle attendees are accomplished musicians who add solos, harmonies, and can play various instruments. Others enjoy joining and adding their instruments and voices to the mix.

Here are a few guidelines that have helped to make this group inclusive and fun: --Please bring copies of the song choices you would like to play. If you are unable to make copies, please choose from the extensive songbook that is available. In this way, everyone can participate.
--Please be respectful of the person who is leading the song. We all get excited and want to be sure we are on the same page, but we also want to let the person leading the song share their ideas/keys/chords/style/tempo, etc. There are a lot of people all trying to hear and listen to the instructions.
--Please be aware of the volume of your playing so that everyone can be heard. There are no microphones, so it's helpful to be to be mindful of volume so that we all sound like the harmonious group of musicians that we are : )

The song circle is really about the joy of playing and singing. Come join us!

I will be there, but I am not sure my guest is coming. If there's someone who definitely wants that spot, please let me know. I don't want to keep anyone from being able to go.

Yes, thanks, Laura, for hosting this jam and potluck.
I forgot to chip in my $3 (didn't see the kitty) but I'll add that in, next time.

It looks like I might have a schedule conflict tonight, so I changed my RSVP to "no." I might still come if there's space available, but won't know for a couple of hours.

Hi Anita, okay, let me know if you are coming. There is space, since I'm allowing more people than usual to this, so no worries. But let me know either way. Thanks!

    What should I/we bring?

    July 11

    • Laurab

Do you mean what dish for the potluck? Bring anything healthy, salad, hummus, guacamole, fruit salad, meat, etc. Are you bringing a guest? - you said I/we? If you are bringing a guest, please put it as plus one on the RSVP.

LauraB, I'd really love to come to the jamfest, but I am hosting an international animation mini-festival. Bummer-O-Rama! Very difficult to back out of that one... I even have some delicious songs in the queue, and scrumptious food ambitions. So sad.

Sorry we'll miss you Jim. Animation mini festival sounds fun as well.
