Hosts will lead 2-3 games to spur your creativity. Everyone will work individually during the games/exercises but come together after each game to share what they have created.

Bring your instrument and a notebook for sketching out your ideas.

Note: There is one piano available in the living room.  It will be reserved for the first person who RSVPs and requests use.

Also, if you would like, bring a snack to share.

Feel free to message either host if you have any questions.

There were more people on the Waitlist than were attending, LOL. I am supposing this is at someone's house, or if not, a larger venue could be selected?

I will discuss this with the SIS leadership team and see what suggestions they have. Last night, there were 4 people on the RSVP list who didn't show up to the event, so there were 7 of us in the end. This actually turned out to be a pretty nice number of people, but it is sad with such a big wait list. It might mean that we start to require a pre-paid fee for the event to help encourage attendance (which also helps build SIS funds for renting spaces in the future).

Pre-paid and then refunded when they arrive, LOL.

Could a clearer description of this be made for next time? Game? What kinds of game? Is a book used with songwriting-games in it? :D

I totally agree. It was a graat evening. The idea of coming with an open mind, free of preconceived expectations (of yourself mainly), is very powerful to the organic process of creating. IMHO

So, these are games that get people to write songs? :)

      June 17, 2013

  • Nancy

It was great to learn and try out different collaborative and creative methods of getting started on a song and I was amazed at everyone's results (including my own :)!! I would love to do this sort of thing again. Highly recommend.

Hello Nancy. Happy it was a valuable experience for you. Excited to see how this may spark yours and others in the group songwriting.

      June 17, 2013

  • Erin J.

If this sort of thing is in high demand I'd be happy to host one at my home as well.

    June 14, 2013

    • Elsa

Yes, that would be great. I'll follow-up with you about it.

      June 14, 2013

    • jean

very nice of you to offer, Erin!

Very fun to meet all of you and hear your new songs. Thanks Elsa for opening your house, and Jean for leading the games!

you added a lot to the mix, Josh! I'd love to hear your Russian poetry music. :)

      June 14, 2013

  • Elsa

Thank you to everyone for making this a fun event. I was so impressed with what everyone come up with in such a short amount of time.

    2 · June 14, 2013

    • jean

It's sort of magical how that happens, don't you think? I'm already adding another verse to my new song.

This was super fun and inspiring. I loved hearing everyone's songs. I would totally do this again!

  • Griffin

Great fun. I wish we had more time. As always, the musicians in SiS are excellent, talented individuals with a diversity of styles. What a fertile field for growth.

I still have not received the address.

    June 13, 2013

    • Elsa

I sent the address by e-mail more than a week ago to all people who had RSVPed. I just re-sent the address again by e-mail. Let me know if this second mailing didn't work.

      June 13, 2013

  • Nancy

Also, if no one has reserved the piano, I would like to - or share with someone?

    June 12, 2013

    • Griffin

I think we can probably share. I was planning on riding my motorcycle and thus would have a very difficult time carrying my piano. Could you bring a guitar? Then we could swap off.

      June 12, 2013

    • Nancy

Thanks for responding - sounds good!

      June 13, 2013

  • Nancy

I can't seem to find an email with the address in my inbox. Did I accidentally delete it, or was it not sent yet? Thanks!

    June 12, 2013

    • Griffin

It was sent by Elsa and was titled 'Songwriting for Individuals - Event Address'

Using one or both of those search terms, hopefully you can locate the email.

    • Nancy

      Got it - thanks!

      June 13, 2013

  • Alison P.

Sorry for late cancel. I hope someone will take my place.

    June 12, 2013

  • jean

hello everyone! Looking forward to seeing you in a couple days!
Please bring pen, paper and a novel or other short story book if you have one handy. It's for one of the games we may get to.
Most of all, bring a sense of fun! As it will be!

    June 11, 2013

  • Griffin

I would like to use the piano, though I would be willing to bring my digital piano if necessary, or bring a guitar and take turns on the piano with someone who is also a multi-instrumentalist.

    May 8, 2013

    • Elsa

"I" can not be tuned, at least I don't think so. I meant to say "It was tuned".

      June 7, 2013

    • Griffin

I was tuned once. It wasn't a pleasant experience. I will save you the pain and suffering and leave you untuned. ;)

As long as the piano isn't so horribly out of tune that it is unmusical, I will be quite happy with it. Thank you.

My personal piano has not been tuned in at least 10 years and has been moved twice, and I still find it preferable to my digital keys.

      Thanks again.

    I'd love to participate :)

    May 8, 2013

    • Elsa

Since this seems to be popular, I will try to have another one in the near future. So if you don't make it off the wait list, there will be more opportunities in the future.

Can we bring a guest who is not a member of this meetup?

    May 8, 2013

    • Elsa

I'm sorry, we don't have the space to accommodate guests. We have a limited number of people that can attend this event because we need to have private spaces for people to work.

      May 8, 2013

  • Hali E.

    Will there be a cost?

    May 8, 2013

    • Elsa

No, there is not a cost for this event!

    • Hali E.

I'd love to come. I'm actually new to this site and don't know how to RSVP.

      May 8, 2013

  • Pam

I'm a lyricist only, no instrument. I RSVP'd to save my spot, but can give it up if that's not okay. :) Thanks!

    May 8, 2013

    • Elsa

This event is designed for the solo singer-songwriter and for each person to work individually. It would be best for everyone to be comfortable writing musical melodies, as well as lyrics. Having some skills on an instrument usually makes writing music easier, but an a capella vocalists can also accomplish this as well. I would suggest waiting to attend an event that is collaboration-oriented, if you do not write music. By the way, I'm thinking of hosting a collaborative event like this in a couple months.

Hello from the tour road in CA!! Really looking forward to sharing this eve with you all. Thank you Elsa, for inviting me to co-host. Til soon. Back to the road. jean

  • Erin J.

    This sounds fun!

    May 8, 2013

  • Stephanie F.

Right now, my only instrument is my voice. Will that do?

    May 8, 2013

    • Elsa

Yes, that's fine. I think one of the games might involve use of chords and in that case, we might need to figure something out. We can make it work.
