Songwriting in Small Groups / Band Mixer

In this songwriting event, you will be assigned to a group of 2-4 (mostly groups of 3).  Balanced groups will be designed by the hosts based on your answers to the list of questions below (you will be asked these questions when you RSVP).

Structure of event: 1) Gather and find out your group assignment. 2) Groups split into separate rooms and will have 90 minutes to work together. 3) All groups come back together and have 5-10 minutes to share their progress.

Groups will then be highly encouraged present a final song at the SIS Monthly Meeting on August 19 at 7:00 pm.  This will probably mean that the groups will arrange some practice times between this event and the Aug. 19 meeting.  If you can not make the August 19 meeting and you are not willing to practice outside of this event, please DO NOT RSVP.

Questions you will be asked when you RSVP:

1. Are you stronger at writing words or music (or equal in both)?

2. What instruments do you play?  Please list all and mark which one(s) are primary. (Note: For this event, it is fine if you don't play an instrument.)

3. Would you be comfortable being the lead singer for the group?

4. How much songwriting experience do you have?

Things to bring to the event: 1) Your instrument(s) 2) Any pieces of lyric/music ideas that you are willing to share with the group, but not completed songs.  3) An open, positive, and inclusive attitude.

The songs written in the group will have equal authorship of everyone in the group.

Notes: There is a piano available in the living room.  Please communicate with hosts, if you are interested in using it.

There is no charge for this event.

Please message hosts if you have any questions.

This exercise worked very well. I think we likely got 3 good songs out of the group that day...

I agree with Ann. I like this format. It was a fun afternoon. It was very productive and each group has a good start on a song. Looking forward to the finished products.

I had a great time and I'm looking forward to completing and performing our song. It was a pleasure working with Greg and Bill!

Sorry to miss this, but I didn't get this email until almost 4 p.m. Maybe next time. Yes, Elsa, some kind of tweaking would be good.

Bill King, who plays Guitar and harmonica, is off the wait list and taking Thomas's place in the Gold Band. Since this is a last minute change, I will try to confirm with Bill that he is actually still available.

    • Elsa

The way this automatic waitlist is set-up, when someone cancels, it automatically changes the top person on the waitlist to an RSVP of YES. This is without the top person manually confirming that they can still make it. That's why I'm trying to check-in with Bill King that he can still attend. (I'm considering trying the manual wait list for the next event, that gives everyone on the wait list a chance to be the first to RSVP for the new spot.)

Sorry something came up hope someone can slide in?

I'm really sorry for my last-minute cancellation, but I have to fly to VA this morning to attend to a family emergency. I hope one of the folks on the waiting list will be able to take my place on short notice.

    • Elsa

I wish you the best on your trip. It was kind of you to take the time to change your RSVP before leaving.

John Apolis, who plays Guitar, is off the wait list and will be filling the Audrey/Lorien/Cameron spot in the Green Band.

    • Bill D.

hmmm, maybe you're on to something. Do they know you?

      July 19, 2013

    • Bill D.

We spent a fair amount of time to get the bands balanced but we don't control who cancels. As Elsa said we decided to simply replace any person that cancels rather than try to re-balance the bands every time someone cancels. It is just random that the cancellations have come to the green band.

  • Cameron K.

Sorry, I have last minute work on Sunday, so I won't be able to attend

    July 18, 2013

    • Elsa

No problem. Thanks for changing your RSVP. It is good we have a wait list!

      July 18, 2013

  • Elsa

Cameron Keller, who plays Piano and Uke, just got off the wait list and is taking Audrey's/Lorien's spot in the Green Band.

    July 16, 2013

  • Lorien

    Boo;( next time.

    July 15, 2013

  • Elsa

When people change their RSVP, our plan is to substitute the new person from the waitlist into the dropped persons spot in the band assignments. Unless it REALLY doesn't work, then we will switch things around.
Lorien, who plays Rhythm Guitar, will be taking Audrey's spot in the Green Band (temporary color names).
If there are many more substitutions, I will re-send out all the band assigments.

Now I seem to have NO RSVP on here??? :-( Meetup deleted one of the accounts which it seems my remaining RSVP was connected to. Please consider I'm still on the roster to attend? I'm going back to Meetup admins.

Will attendees be willing to separate their egos from their contribution and participation?

    • Elsa

I hope that everyone will do what they need to do to help make this a nice collaborative environment. I would prefer that we don't list out each type of behavior that we find undesirable. Rather bring the best of yourself to the experience and hope that everyone else does this also.

      2 · May 30, 2013

  • Elsa

For those of you who play a lot of instruments, we will give you an idea of which instruments would be best to bring to the event about 1 week ahead of time.

    May 30, 2013

  • Griffin

I would like to use the piano. However, if there is a need I will bring my digital keys. I can also bring one or more guitars and share the piano with another multi-instrumentalist.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
