SoCoPhoGro Image Showings at the Santa Rosa Welcome Center

We have officially closed the RSVP for your interest in this showing.  We have chosen the members who will show for the rest of the year.  We will have more shows to come in the fall and spring of 2014!  Thank you for your interest and talents!

Remy and Ray

Hello Members

We made the announcement Sunday at our HDR field meetup that we have entered in a "partnership" with the Santa Rosa Convention and Visitors Bureau to be the "artists in residence" for a while...

A few of us have run our "test" hang at the Welcome center and we are ready to include any member who wants to participate in this show.

Here are the details:

  • Your images will show in the welcome center for 4-5 weeks.
  • You will be responsible for framing them, pricing them, and preparing them for either hanging or table top easel display at your own expense.   Your contact information and cost should be on a business card or label on the front accompanying your images.
  • Your images should showcase Santa Rosa or Sonoma County.
  • You are responsible for showing up on your day to hang, and your day to take down.
  • Images should be 5x7 or larger.  The larger your images, the fewer you will need.  A rough estimate will be 4-7 images.
  • If your image is sold, the Welcome Center will send you a check for the amount you've listed, unless the purchase is done via credit card, where the will take a small fee to cover their cost of that processing.  You will be asked to replace your sold image as soon as possible so the walls / table top remains decorated.
  • You will be asked to sign a waiver saying the Welcome Center is not responsible for lost, broken or stolen images.  (the center is open 7 days a week, and there is only one door in and out - however, stranger things have happened).
  • Prior to your show time, you will need to submit to Remy a 4-7 sentence paragraph about your approach to photography, what you like to do, what you like about sonoma county - something that defines you...and a small photo of you to put on the flyer that will be in the center while your images are displayed (a sample is included here).

The artists in residence right now are Remy, Ray, Ali Fraser and Steve Berger.  If you want to see what you are getting in to before you say yes, we suggest you go to the Welcome center and go into the conference room and take a look asap. They are open 7 days a week.

How we will choose who gets to hang?

We will leave this meetup active and receiving RSVPs for the remainder of 2013.  The first showing is May 4th.

Every time we will have a new round of participants we'll put everyone's name into a hat and draw them out.  If you are not chosen your name stays in the hat.  As new members put their name on the list, we'll keep adding into the hat.  We think this is the fairest way to do it. We also know its going to mean that many people just wont get selected.  We are looking for lots of venues to showcase local artists so if you hear of any let us know!

For the first round, we'll draw two sets of people...those who will be responsible for hanging by May 4th, and those who need to be ready to hang by June 15.  We'll then draw each group giving them a 4 week heads up to prepare for their show.

Please only RSVP Yes, if your intent is to participate fully for this opportunity.

If you want to get your name out there as a local artist, dont let this scare you!  Jump in!

Of course email Remy or Ray with any questions you have.

Join or login to comment.

    Suggestion. Maybe folks could post a small sized (800x600?) digital of the photos you display at the showplace.

  • Chuck L.

    I've visited the display twice now. (Yeah it takes a while for things to sink through my thick head.) OK here are my observations: Ray - my wife and the woman working the desk that day both loved your horse. I still prefer your doorway photo. Both my wife and the woman working the desk had to instruct me about the red thing. I would have never figured it to be a flower. Remy - love your antiqued frames. Very nice touch. Cathleen - your HDR landscapes are phenominal. Very nice work. Debralee - absolutely LOVE that purple flower with the yellow center. John - if I have the money I would buy your seascape. Very well done! Cecelia - I liked your canvas print stretched over that frame. And I loved your flower with the butterfly. All you folks displayed some wonderful art. Thanks much for continuing it be an inspiration to me, all of you :D

    HI Guys. Sorry with Brian's Graduation and a few other work projects I've been a little lack in my responses both individually and and globally but that does not mean it s not important or that Im not paying attention. We are thrilled there is so much interest in hanging. Its tough to manage a 'fair' way to do things especially with a few factors like how long someone has been in the group. when they rsvp'd and how many spaces we have etc....It is my (and Ray's I believe) utmost priority to make sure we do things fair, and the way we decided on it felt the most fair, taking in to account all the factors. We know it means someone may never get chosen for this project. Not sure how to manage that expectation! But thank you for all of your interest, feedback and suggestions. We are working together to make this group the best it can be...so thank you all!! xo R

      Well said Marlene. I agree. iChat appreciation Ray and Remy for all you do to promote our wonderful group!

  • Valerie

    I'd like to thank you guys for setting this up. I'd like to run this up the flagpole...what about cutting off the "names in the hat" on July 1st and then draw the names for the rest of the year. That way those whose name is drawn can prepare, and the rest of us can end the suspense and cry into our pillows if necessary. If people drop out after their name is drawn, then others can be chosen.

    Welcome, Patrice!

    2 · June 2, 2013

    • Phyllis G.

      I agree with you Valerie. I think drawing names is fair giving equal opportunity to everyone. I would also appreciate knowing now whether I am one of the photographers selected. A waiting list could be created and those folks added later if others drop out. Deadlines are a fact of life and if you join the club later you will have missed out of this event as well as other events that occurred before you joined.

    Hello all,

    What a great site! I noticed you had an earlier message about our current Sonoma County Regional Parks Photography Contest. I just wanted to let you know where you can get the details: www.sonoma-county.org/foundation. Early bird photographers that enter before June 10 will be considered not only for the grand prize, but also for early bird prizes including a camera bag from LowePro or Think Tank Photo. I am new here. The way I am reading the post is that in responding "yes" it puts my name in the "hat" and I will have four weeks to prepare if selected.

  • Nik C.

    One of the important aspects of being a photographer/artist is to cultivate the proverbial "thick-skin" and deal with criticisms as well as compliments... it is fine, well and good when all we hear is flowery oohs ahhs and wows about our work... but an artists growth and opinion/attitude can be un-realistically distorted if we never learn to handle the critics. I personally WANT to hear the negative comments and ( objective ) criticisms so I keep things in perspective and maintain some humility. We are encouraged by our group leaders to offer ideas, suggestions and opinions and they ought to all be appreciated & considered for what they are ... and as long as they are not taken personally ... with that "thick-skin" in tact ... we will all do just fine. IMHO :)

    3 · May 30, 2013

  • Nik C.

    Since the hat-draw method will, by virtue of serendipitous "luck"... inevitably eliminate some members whose names have been "in" but not drawn because they are missed ... it ( IMO ) does not seem to be the "fairest" way to choose members for showing: Another approach is to simply, systematically select the needed number of members from a waiting list in the order ( by date / time ) they are listed and if for some reason any are not able or ready to be shown ... then have a hat-draw to fill that spot. Does anyone else agree this would be a more equitable way to assure that "everyone" has a fair shot to be on exhibit?

    1 · May 29, 2013

    • Tom D.

      Starting over... can't believe my typos...
      ~~~~I'm not sure how many said they'd be interested in doing a display, but our odds of being selected over the next year should be quite good.
      I personally have a display inside the Jack London Saloon (since my studio is above) and it's time I start looking for other places to hang my images. I'm taking this conversation as a 'kick in the butt' to get my images seen by more people. Thanks!
      1 · May 29, 2013
    • Dave H.
      So here are my 2 cent on the topic. I personally think that a lottery is the most fair, in this case. Ray and Remy put in the time and effort to put this together for the group and chose to offer this option. Finding venues for photographer can be a very time consuming endever. I would encourage Those who think it is unfair and that it should be done differently, to go out and find the group new venues, then you get to decide how to decide who shows when. Thank you Ray and Remy for for putting this together for us, I really appreciate what you have put together.
    Congratulations to all of you members that were selected for the first two shows. Let me know if you need help with printing and matting to make the deadline. I don't wish to become a lab that is open to the public but I do enjoy working with advanced amateurs and professionals.
    2 · April 25, 2013
    • Kathleen
      Hi Tom, I understand you don't want to become a public lab but how do you feel about giving some advice? I have used Bay Photo to print and mount some of my favorite photos. I have had them mount using "gator board." What do you think of this method? I will understand if you don't have time or inclination to answer. Thanks.
      May 29, 2013
    • Tom D.
      Hi Kathleen,
      I think Bay Photo is a good lab and I think gatorfoam is wonderful stuff but expensive and over-kill for many jobs. I use 3/16" or 1/2" acid-free foamboard but don't think Bay gives that as an option. Of their options, I'd be using gatorfoam often.
      Thanks for asking.
  • Sandy
    I know that Ray and Remy most likely spent hours trying to come up with the fairest way they could think for this awesome opportunity, knowing full well some would view it as not fair. To complicate the process to make it "fair" seems unreasonable. EVERYONE is welcome to organize similar opportunities and share them with our group if they so choose. I'm excited about the possibility for myself to exhibit and everyone else who is chosen in the future. If I do not get the opportunity, that is fine, too, as there is only so much space and so much time to exhibit. I agree with Cecilia in that this group FAR surpasses others I have belonged to and since have withdrawn from. Ray and Remy spend alot of their "spare" personal time making this as awesome group for US and I very much appreciate that ~ thank you Ray and Remy for all your hard work!! =)
    Photobuddies, I'm getting some matted prints ready that I hope will sell during my showing time at the Welcome Center. I'd like to find about 20 flat cellophane bags to protect matted prints. Size I need appears to be 11 by 14. Does anyone have a few of these they would sell me? I'd sure appreciate it. John cell:[masked]
Love you guys!
    • Tom D.
      I'm not saying you should all match your prices. I'm saying BE PROUD OF YOUR WORK AND CHARGE A GOOD PRICE FOR IT. :)
      Also... I hope that they allow you space to hang a little 'bio' next to your work (even if it means you hand one less image to have room for it). Try to help the viewer connect with you as an artist. Then the price becomes secondary in many cases. Maybe even charge more and donate part of the proceeds to a charity... maybe all four of you do the same. Get some publicity for what you're doing!
      Hey, it's Friday night... time I stop talking photography, make dinner... and then get back to my photography. Debralee... have fun!
